Social Justice Excursion

On Monday we had 17 Year Six Students take part in a Social Justice Conference in Wantirna. The facilitator was Catherine Scerri  - an Australian who has worked in the Philippines for more than 20 years with an organisation (Bahay Tuluyan) helping vulnerable children and families. The students participated in some extremely meaningful activities including a simulation that explored how resources are unevenly shared across the world and other activities that explore inequality with housing, healthcare, education, location and employment. Our students then learnt about four words that mean a lot to the people of the Bahay Tuluyan Organisation and we had two women from the Phillipines, Abi and Clang who explained how these words helped them to survive.

diskarte- being resourceful in how you solve problems.

We listened to a story of how Abi and her siblings would wait for the truck that delivered mung beans to drive through her area. They would use garbage bags to collect the beans that dropped off the truck to then cook for the family.

tiyaga- the hard work it takes to survive

We listened to Clang tell the story of how her and her cousins had to climb down an extremely steep and rough hill to get resources - they had to use large sticks for balance and really be careful with their footing. This was the only way to get food so there was no other option and took a lot of hard work.

tiis - perseverance/survival mode

Clang told us the story of how she bought a pair of white sneakers from a second hand store. She would walk bare foot  to school so she didn't wear them out. She would wash them often and if there was a repair that needed to be made she would sew it herself. She persevered with this one pair of shoes for over 10 years.

malasakit - concern or care for others

We learnt about the programs that Bahay Tuluyan offer to empower children and youths in Phillipines and how this helped Abi who was able to go to college and is now a teacher and Clang who discovered her talents in hospitality who now manages one of the hotels that gives others skills in order to join the workforce!

We watched this video that was very eye opening to the students and worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3nllBT9ACg&ab_channel=KnovvaAcademy
