Performance Averages and Progress Reports

The latest Progress Reports will be released this Monday. We have found that the discussions around the scores being lower than 2.5 have resulted in a marked improvement for many students. These students will be further monitored by the Student Management Team with Parent meetings and Student Support groups implemented. Scores that are consistently below 2.0 may see the student repeat the Year in 2020.

Students in Year 9 and 10 who continue to be in the ‘at risk’ category will be provided with Careers support as an opportunity to start fostering more intrinsic motivation towards meeting our basic requirements. If not, then we will need to look at finding something more suitable that will enable their future success.

Japanese International Students’ Visit

The International Japanese students left us on Thursday, 22 August, after having been at the school for two and a half weeks.  They participated in Year 9, 10 and 11 classes.  They also went on a trip down the Great Ocean Road and to the Melbourne CBD.  It is hoped that one or more of these students, along with the Chinese students from the previous group, come and join us as long term International students.

We also have three Individual short term students who are with us for six weeks.  Welcome to Haisong and Stella, in Year 8 and attending GELC, and Jerry who is in Year 10.

Student Feedback on the Student Attitude to School Survey

The SRC have been given the opportunity to offer feedback on the Attitude to School Survey. Over a lunchtime the students worked in their year levels on the data related to their year level.  They were asked to interpret the data giving a summary of their responses.  The students were then asked to give ideas on how the students and the teachers could improve the data.  This feedback will then be shared with staff and students and I am sure many of their ideas will be implemented.

Student Voice and Agency Presentation to Barwon North Regional Network

On Thursday, 15 August, we had three students from our SRC present to the Barwon North Regional Network on our approach to Student Voice and Agency. Edita Salcinovic, Keily Mc Kee and Mitch Cazaly were outstanding in presenting to a room full of Principals at Truffleduck. They highlighted their journey with unpacking school data in order to present to staff. The students, after their presentation, then sat on tables with a number of different Principals who fired questions at them. We were all so proud of the students and the professional manner in which they presented themselves and for the way they responded positively to the questioning without training or prompting.

Student presentation at the National Council of Women Victoria: My Vote My Voice, 19/08/19

NGSC students were invited to participate in the annual My Vote My Voice event which is held at Parliament House Victoria. Three Year 11 girls, Hayley, Lily and Angela took up the offer and chose to present their views along with 11 other schools. This year's theme of ‘Male and Female future voters’ provided opportunities for students to discuss voting age, knowledge about political parties, the impact of media and social media on voting, democracy, student voice and action, and more. Our students used data from a recent Parliamentary report and their own experience as the basis of their presentation. The girls spoke clearly and confidently in such a new environment and in front of students who are well rehearsed in the art of public speaking. On early reflection, the girls can identify how this experience will transfer into their leadership skills and also to their role as community citizens.

Important Notice

Re: Excursion Process

Please remember to meet the school timelines for excursion permissions and payments. These processes are designed to facilitate good management around transport, staffing, medical needs and event access. Any lateness with permissions/payments creates stress to the process and will no longer be accepted. Students who do not meet timelines will be provided with a program at school on the day of the activity.
