Year 9s making a difference
The Year 9 Indonesian classes have been investigating the question “Is it inevitable that some wildlife species will become extinct in order for human development to progress?” They have looked into problems facing Indonesian animals and if there is anything they can do to help.
As part of this investigation, we packed ourselves onto a bus, along with Pak Ross, Ms Cameron and Ms Kimpton and headed to Melbourne Zoo. There, we were on the lookout to see what they have identified as the biggest threats to orang-utans, as well as what we can do alongside with the zoo to help raise awareness of these issues. It was a beautifully warm winter day and a great way to find out what kind of campaigns the Zoo is running to raise awareness about issues like palm oil and habitat destruction.
Back at school, the next step is to raise awareness, maybe raise some money and take some action to support their chosen animal. It has been great fun to see what creative solutions our Year 9s have come up with. All the money they raise will be donated to The Orang-utan Project. A group of our students will be visiting Sumatra in September to see what good the donations are doing in country.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our Year 9 projects. If you would like to see what you can do too, https://www.zoo.org.au/dont-palm-us-off/ and https://www.orangutan.org.au/ are good places to start!
