Alex Smith - Champion of News
Last week I attended the News Champions Forum in Canberra, along with 20 other students from around Australia. The forum was part of a study about how to ensure more young people interact with news media. The data from the study and our interviews recorded by the ABC will be used in an exhibition Truth, Power and Free Press at the Museum of Australian Democracy. This exhibition will cover the work journalists do and the ongoing battle with truth and representation in the news media. Our interviews are also featuring in ABC radio, ABC Education and Behind The News.
On Sunday afternoon we, the News Champions, had a brief tour of Old Parliament House (now known as the Museum of Australian Democracy) and participated in introductory activities.
On Monday morning the News Champions discussed questions that we had submitted prior to the forum. E.g., Why is some news not reported on in much detail (court cases and crime)?
After that, the News Diet Challenge videos submitted by the Champions were displayed.
ABC journalists spoke at the Forum about interview technique, what life is like being a journalist and behind the scenes of the online, radio and television platforms.
After lunch, the Champions as a group, prepared a set of questions for a planned survey of 1000 Australian youth aged 12-16, investigating how they connect with news media.
In the late afternoon, Youth Representative for the UN, Amos Washington spoke about his role being a voice for the youth of Australia. The CEO of GG’s Flowers (Canberra) spoke about her social enterprise employing people with a disability in her floristry business.
On Tuesday the Champions learned about leadership qualities and how to pitch an article to the news media. Finally, the Champions discussed how they could keep in touch after the forum.
My highlight of the Forum was meeting other youth passionate about the news and politics. I also loved learning about life as a journalist and the behind the scenes work they do.
Thanks to the Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament House), Western Sydney University, Queensland University of Technology, Google and ABC Education for sponsoring and supporting the News Champions Forum.
Thank you very much Ms Bordignon for advertising the opportunity to participate in the News Champions Forum.

Term 4 has begun for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program with students in Year 3 and 4 creating a "Pear Crumble” dish, which they enjoyed with some ice cream and a “Chai Latte.” In the weeks to come, students are making "Parmesan and Spinach Gnocchi with Garlic Bread” and, in the lead up to Christmas, a traditional “Gingerbread” recipe and “Chocolate Brownies.”
We have recently harvested rainbow silverbeet, bok choy, kale, spinach and onions. A team of keen gardeners from Year 3 have joined Mrs Hemmings at lunchtimes to plant pumpkins, tomatoes, sunflowers and rosemary. We are planting some vegetables now that will be ready for harvesting and cooking at the beginning of 2020.
The photos are of Mrs Zweck’s Year 3 class cooking the "Pear Crumble".

They had a wonderful time out on the water at Moama Beach on Monday. A big thank you to Echuca/Moama Stand Up Paddle!

Remembrance Day Art Competition
In preparation for our upcoming visit to the Shrine of Remembrance on Year 4 camp, students completed an A3 poster design with the theme of “Floral Emblems,” for the Remembrance Day Art competition. The competition had a total of 230 entrants from schools across Victoria and New South Wales. Lylianna Kyne of 4M has been announced as one of the eight finalists. The winner will be announced on 11th November, as part of the Shrine’s Remembrance Day celebrations. Congratulations to Lylianna for being recognised for her artistic talents.
Remembrance Day poppy
A few weeks ago, Ray Gribbin one of our community volunteers who has been assisting in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden gave our Year 4 students a poppy plant for them to take home with the hope that they would flower in time for Remembrance Day. Fletcher and Imogen from 3S were surprised to find one of the poppy’s we planted at school already in flower!
Year 7 Visual Arts
