Head of Junior School

SARAH BOARDMAN

Acting Head of Junior School

Welcome Back

Congratulations to all the students for the proactive way they have approached the start to our new term. This has been great to observe in all our classrooms. Thank you to the wonderful parents who are assisting their children to build independence in the mornings. It is fabulous to see so many children being encouraged to carry their own bags into classrooms. Well done to those students who are successfully organised for their days.

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself for those families I have not already had the pleasure to meet. I have been working at Oakleigh Grammar for the past 5 years as the Coordinator of the Early Learning Centre, which has given me the opportunity to meet many of the students in the P-5 section of the Junior School too. I have worked in a range of different school settings in both national and international Primary and K-12 school settings.

I strongly believe in the importance of building solid foundations for children’s ongoing learning, focusing on developing thinking and inquiry skills in partnership with literacy and numeracy skills, in a meaningful, rigorous and authentic way for all students. I also value the opportunity to build beneficial, ongoing partnerships with families, working together to encourage each student to consistently challenge themselves, as they holistically develop a solid understanding of how they learn best. I can be contacted via email on SBoardman@oakleighgrammar.vic.edu.au and I am looking forward to my time with you all as Acting Head of the Junior School.

We are delighted to announce the safe arrival of Mrs Cummins’ beautiful baby girl, Georgia Susan, on Friday April 20. I am sure that you will all join me in congratulating Lauren on this wonderfully happy news and we wish the whole Cummins family all the best at this most exciting time.

The students' behaviour was exceptional at the whole School Assembly, Paschal Divine Liturgy and ANZAC Day service during the last two weeks.  Students behaved with respect and awareness of the importance of the occasion at the service for our fallen soldiers. Thank you to the Junior School Students who provided the incredible artwork for this important assembly. The choir performance, assisted by our Year 1 students of In Flanders Field was of an exceptional standard, with thanks given to Ms Calysta Morgan for her leadership of this piece. Students also created wreaths, wrote letters and explored symbols of ANZAC Day during the creation of our display. This can be currently viewed in the Junior School corridor. What a fabulous start to Term 2!

Early Learning Centre

We are delighted to welcome some new members to our ELC staff team.  Ms Leah Wilson is our acting ELC Coordinator and can be contacted via email (LWilson@oakleighgrammar.vic.edu.au) for any ELC or Out of School Hours Care enquiries. Ms Rhodine Agetzis has also joined our K4A team as their co-educator too.

It is with regret that we farewell Ms Melanie Paton from our team. We thank her for all her dedication during her time in the Centre, and wish her all the best for the future.

Oakleigh Grammar Football Academy

It was very exciting to see the first training sessions for students enrolled in the Oakleigh Grammar Football Academy.  This new initiative for the school provides the opportunity for students to access a focussed football training program as part of their studies here.  This term training is being held at school every Tuesday (2:00pm-3:20pm) and Friday (1:00pm-3:20pm), with opportunities for academy members to access local training facilities to further their football skills.  Spaces are still available for Year 3 to 5 students to join our academy.  If you are interested in your child joining this wonderful initiative, or accessing a trial session for your child, please contact Ms Caroline Leach for further details.

School Holiday Program

Thank you to Ms Clare and her team for running a wonderful holiday programme, with record numbers attending again this break. This is testament to the fine planning of events and engaging time for the students who attend each day. Please remember that information about the holiday program will be distributed two weeks before the school holidays begin each term.

Uniform

Thank you to all the wonderful students who arrive and leave the school grounds looking immaculate in full uniform. It is fabulous to see parents reminding, and children remembering, to wear their blazers and tuck their shirts in for winter. All students are reminded that they are required to wear their blazer to and from school, as well as to all official school events and functions. For further information about the uniform please see the Junior School Diary.

Please ensure all items of clothing are named correctly, so any items found can be returned to the rightful owner. If you are missing items, the lost property is located at the Student Services desk. Alternatively, if they have been missing for an extended period of time and need to be replaced don’t forget to contact either the Second Hand Uniform Shop run by our School to see if they can assist you with your requirements, or items can be purchased online from Dobsons, our uniform supplier.

After-School Pick-Up

Junior School students are escorted to Oakleigh Grammar Out of School Hours care by the teacher who has them in the last session of the day. It would be helpful to the teacher if parents could write any changes to routine in the student diary.   If students have not been collected by 3.45pm your child will be placed in After School Care as an emergency procedure to ensure his/her safety and wellbeing. In line with this, any students who are not collected from after school clubs within 15 minutes of the session finish time will also be placed in After School Care. Please be aware that there is a charge for Outside School Hours Care.
