Harrison Sly - Sailing

A Report on the Sailing Achievements of Harrison Sly & The St Bede's College Sailing Team, from Martyn & Sue Sly.

Harrison made selection onto the Australian Optimist Sailing Team . This team itself consists of the top 25 Optimist sailors (Optimist is a junior sailing boat) within Australia earlier this year. Only four Victorians in total achieved this status.

Harrison also completed at the National Optimist Teams Racing Championships  and was successful in winning the event,  with the help of his three other team members. A total of 25 teams, each consisting of four sailors competed in this event.

Since then Harrison has also been selected onto the Victorian Optimist Sailing Team, as well as the Victorian Sailing Team (which consists of junior and youth sailors).

At the end of March, St Bede’s Sailing Team

competed at the Victorian Schools Teams Racing Championships, which was held over two days of sailing. A total of 28 secondary school teams (private, catholic and public) competed at this prestigious regatta. Our St Bede’s team performed amazingly well to finish 5th overall with very little team training prior to the event, so our result was certainly an eye opener among the other secondary schools who train hard and long for this regatta. Look out for next year’s competition. We have Mark Freeman from St Bede's College on board, so we will be aiming to raise the bar for our team next year.

Harrison also completed at the Victorian 29er State Championships  also held in March. This time he competed on a 2 person boat (skipper & crew required) with his cousin Tom Dwyer who is a past student of St Bede’s.  Harrison and Tom finished 2nd overall, which was also a fantastic effort as the 29er is a much larger, demanding boat usually sailed by youths and adults.

Harrison will be travelling to Queensland during the mid year break to compete at Queensland Youth Week, as well as travelling to NSW in the September school break to compete in the NSW Youth Championships.
