Careers Corner

The Key to Success

Students who do best at university or TAFE are not necessarily those with the highest ATARs, but those with persistence, determination, organisational and self-management skills. They are also assertive in asking for help.

Make sure you choose a course you will enjoy and are interested in; otherwise, you may experience problems with motivation.

Form friendship groups with other students so you can be active in groups that discuss work and share ideas.  Students that are engaged in learning communities and networks have a more positive university experience.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our Year 12 students well in their future endeavours, whether it be study or work.  We are here to help so please feel free to contact us if you need any further information.

How about a career in Non-Emergency Patient Transport?

A Patient Transport Officer or PTO is responsible for providing transport for patients to and from medical facilities. They are in charge of maintaining and operating patient transport vehicles and providing excellent customer service to patients.

The interactions that a patient has with their patient transport officer can make a huge difference in their medical care experience, putting them at ease and ensuring they feel cared for.

Becoming a PTO could be a rewarding career path if you have a positive, outgoing personality, enjoy driving and connecting with a range of people from different generations, cultures and backgrounds.

Typical duties of a Patient Transport Officer (PTO) can be seen here

PTOs are not paramedics but, rather, they fulfil the vital role of transporting non-critical patients to hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities.

To become a Patient Transport Officer (PTO), one needs to complete a minimum of Certificate III in Non-Emergency Patient Transport.

Excellent Government Websites

In the past I have highlighted the myfuture.edu.au website amongst several others. Here are two more sites worth visiting.

https://www.yourcareer.gov.au

This site is aimed at young people and includes information on careers, Vocational Education and Training (VET), School Leaver’s Support and Occupation information.  It contains quizzes aimed at helping students work out which careers would suit them as well as some excellent resources.  This website was launched by the National Careers Institute so that young people can become more informed about career ideas, career industries, and how to be job ready.

https://www.workforceaustralia.gov.au

This website is best suited to school leavers who are seeking employment.  It is a free online jobsite; searches can be made by region and state, occupational category, type of employment – casual, part-time, or full- time, and covers a range of occupations.  If you are wanting to change careers, why not check it out.

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme

Join a crew of young Australians and embark on a life-changing 11-day journey – learning not only how to sail a square-rigged tall ship, but how to lead, support others and work together as a team.

Since 1988, more than 14,000 young Australians aged 16-23 have joined the national sail training ship Young Endeavour on a life-changing voyage. The program is delivered by professional Royal Australian Navy staff crew who ensure the highest standards of safety are maintained.

Every day on board Young Endeavour is different. During each voyage youth crew spend several days and nights at sea learning to set and furl the sails, keep watch, and take the helm, as well as participating in games and team building activities on deck. Participants assist the chef in the ship’s galley, carry out ship’s rounds with the engineer, chart a course with the navigator, climb the masts, and even take command!

Applications for January – June 2023 are now open. Find out more at Young Endeavour
