New House Names

A large focus of our Centenary celebrations has not only been about honouring our past, but also looking towards our future. Here at Ripponlea Primary, we acknowledge the importance of learning from the local Indigenous Peoples, the Bunurong People.

As such school council has been working with The Bunurong Land Council to ensure we are beginning to authentically embed Indigenous perspectives into our school. One of the ways we decided to do this as part of our centenary celebrations was to include local Indigenous Language.

As well as naming our new garden the Koor Indigenous Garden we were also permitted to use local language for our house names. We were given 3 different group options for the children to vote on. These were land animals, sea animals & local flora. Each child at RPS

had the opportunity to vote on their favourite group.

The votes where very close with just 4 votes between the winner and second place, but during our special centenary assembly the student representative council announced the new names.

So introducing for 2023 Ripponlea’s new house names….

  • Bemin – Ring tailed possum (formerly Furneaux) pronounced Bem - in
  • Warren – Wombat (formerly Orrong) pronounced Wa – reen
  • Booring – Bandicoot (formerly Loch) pronounced Boo – ring
  • Tunparrim – Lizard (formerly Carrington) pronounced Tun- parrum

The next step in the journey of our new houses will be the student and school councils working together to discuss whether we also have a colour change for 2023… watch this
