Common Ground

A joint project between Bunjil Place, Multicultural Arts Victoria and Hampton Park Secondary College has been the focus of a series of workshops over the past few weeks. Mr Joel Evans from Bunjil Place led our students through four intensive workshops based around the theme of identity.  Students were then encouraged to write their own poetry based on their lives or issues that concerned them.

On Thursday 15 August a group of 17 student poets from Years 7 – 12 headed off to the Immigration Museum. Firstly they were taken on a tour of the Immigration Museum. The history of Melbourne was shared with the students focusing on how Melbourne came to be the rich and multicultural city that it is today.

After this, students were given time to practice their poetry using the microphones to project their voices.

When we returned to the Immigration Museum, having had dinner, we were amazed to find that the room was standing room only. Over two hundred members of the public had gathered to be part of the Common Ground event. Common Ground is a unique, multilingual spoken word workshop series that uses poetry to promote social cohesion and mutual understanding. It has provided young people with opportunities to connect with each other, to develop new creative ideas around their diverse faiths and identities and to promote social cohesion and mutual understanding.

Each of our students spoke confidently to share their poetry with the members of the public. At these events, the audience show their appreciation through the use of clicking, jingling and other vocalisations. The students’ ideas were well received by the audience, receiving many sounds of agreement and understanding.

Congratulations to each of these poets – their bravery in sharing their personal poetry in this forum should be applauded. These are our leaders of the future.

Make sure that you are involved in Common Ground Part II to be held at Bunjil Place very soon.

Model UN Conference

On July 31st, HPSC was the host of a Model United Nations Conference where 6 other schools from near and far joined us in the RPAC to discuss and debate the global issue of gender equality.

HPSC students from Years 7 to 12 worked alongside each other, and with students from other schools, to represent different countries and present their discussions on the topic.

We are so proud of the way our students represented the College on the day!
