What is Resilience?

Resilience enables young people to shift back along the mental health continuum towards good mental health. Looking at this continuum, it’s not static but is something that can change over time due to experiences and circumstances.

Mental health can be thought of as existing on a continuum, with positive mental health at one end, mild and moderate symptoms in the middle and severe symptoms at the other end.

Resilience is particularly important for children and young people. A young person’s ability to be resilient can depend upon many things. Depending upon their situation, a young person’s resilience may vary. Importantly, specific situations or events that one young person may find challenging, another may not.

Being resilient is associated with better academic performance and school behaviour and over the longer term, fewer mental health issues and greater life opportunities. Individual resilience is something that can be fostered and developed over time.
