Intermediate Rugby State Finals
The Intermediate boys and girls Rugby teams made the trek across the West Gate to Altona Meadows for the 9-a-side State Finals. Our teams had earned their spot after winning their pools at the South East carnival in term 1.
The girl’s team were up first and got off to a flying start, scoring four tries in the first half before Narre P12 had realised what hit them. Coached by Leo Savelio, the girls showed great organisation defensively and were able to break through the defensive lines at will, with Charlotte Poko, Vineta Kennach (2), Jessica Sili, Ula Falelua Tauaa all scoring tries. The girls ran out winners 24-8.
The boys were up next and also got off to a great start, Clayton Leilua scoring on the first possession. From then on, the boys would find it tough going against a very well drilled Mt Ridley team who, despite tries from Maurice Roberts and Ryan Tanielu, were able to find holes in our defence and scored eight tries to win 12-32. Despite this result, halfbacks VJ Kilisi and Kaiya Kaiwai-Rangikauhata were excellent in distributing the ball to the forwards Vatican Mika and Ezekiel Mani who fought hard against their much larger opponents.
The Girls also had a tough time against Mt Ridley in their next match, going down 0-20. Aliena Faave was immense in defence and made many try saving tackles and Lorna Va led the team’s offense, creating numerous opportunities to score.
Hallam was the boy’s next opponent and at half time, we were in with a sniff at 3-3. Ezekiel Mani was again the star with two tries and Maurice Roberts had the scout’s attention with his second of the day. In a tense final few minutes, a couple of injuries and turnovers led to Hallam tries and a result of 12-20.
Due to a glitch in the fixture both boys and girls teams played Melton at the same time in round three, the boys taking home their first win of the day and the girls going down to the eventual champions. Ula scored again for the girls and the boys put six tries past Melton, Maurice (2) Ryan (2), Dale and Vatican getting on the score sheet.
The girls did not reach the final and so their day was done, but they finished a very respectable third in the State! The boys had one more game and due to a large number of injuries to key players, were 7-0 down against Vic Uni. They showed true HP spirit of fight, resilience and determination and managed to score the final try of the game, Clayton Leilua bookending his day with another score. Carlos Kilisi and Jayden Heng were inspirational in chasing down opposition players even when all seemed lost. The boys ended up fourth in the state, once again a terrific effort.
There are many more rugby events coming up this year, Rugby 7s, Mixed Touch and 13-a-side League for all age groups, please see Mr Christiansen to sign up.
