Classroom News - Stage 1

Stage 1 Learning
Stage 1 have been learning about many things over the last few weeks. In Mathematics we are learning about addition and subtraction concepts and 3D shapes. In Literacy, we have been learning how to write an information report. In Geography we have been looking at Australian People and Places. In PE we have been continuing with game skills and throwing and catching games. In Science, we have been learning about creatures young and old and we have asked children to bring in photos of when they were younger. The students have been enthusiastic when participating in Friday sports games as well. On Fridays, we have all been participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. Some of the activities were using the Sphero's and designing a course to move it around. We have been continuing to use Coding programs on the Ipads. The students have also been accessing their school emails and 'Google Classroom'. The Stage 1 teachers have set up a 'Google Classroom' for our students and some tasks have been put on there that they can do at school and access at home. A note will come home to explain how you can assist your child with accessing this. A new task to create a slideshow on an insect has just been added for the children to complete. They can present their slideshows to their class at school after they have submitted them.
IMMACULATA VISIT
On Monday this week we were very privileged to have the sisters of "The Immaculata" visit us with some of their missionary youth. This is a new order of sisters and brothers based in Tasmania, and their work is to go out and teach the youth of today about Jesus and his mother Mary. The young people involved have given up a year of their life to do this work with the sisters, and also commit themselves to prayer for World Peace. When they visited Stage One they shared their stories, taught us some songs and prayed the Rosary with us. The children were fascinated with their work and asked lots of interesting questions.
Friday Swimming Lessons
This Friday is the first week of our swimming lessons. The Year 1's will walk down at 10.30am for an 11.00am lesson and the Year 2's will walk down at 11.00am for an 11.30am swimming lesson. Thank you to all those parents who have volunteered to walk with us.
Could you please remind your child to bring their swimmers, a swim shirt and have sunscreen. The children will NOT be allowed to swim unless they have a swim shirt.
Google Classroom
All the children are able to access our Google Classroom using their St Mary's email address and password. This has been sent home so that the children can work on some topics at home in their own time. The assignments are always relevant to what we are learning at school. Some children have already completed some amazing assignments on Australian Animals!
Well Done!
NEW LUNCH BREAKS
The children are responding well to the new lunch breaks. We call them 1st and 2nd lunch. We all really enjoy sitting inside to eat. Thank you to those parents who supply a tea towel with their children's lunch. This makes a great tablecloth - very civilised, and also it collects the crumbs!
