Benvenuto - Welcome

Cari Amici

I would like to share this beautiful poem penned by Loris Malaguzzi, a founder of what is know as the Reggio Approach.  It is something that resonates with me both as a parent and a teacher.  At the centre of what we do is the child, young and old.  That is curious, competent, courageous and vulnerable.  Many aspects that we must recognise so that we can support and help them grow to be the best they can be.  I wonder what you think when you read this?

The child

The child

is made of one hundred.

The child has

a hundred languages

a hundred hands

a hundred thoughts

a hundred ways of thinking

of playing, of speaking.

A hundred, always a hundred

ways of listening,

of marvelling, of loving,

a hundred joys

for singing and understanding.

a hundred worlds

to discover,

a hundred worlds

to invent,

a hundred worlds

to dream.

The child has a hundred languages

(and a hundred hundred hundred more)

but they steal ninety-nine.

The school and the culture

separate the head from the body.

They tell the child

to think without hands

to do without head

to listen and not to speak

to understand without joy

love and marvelling

only at Easter and Christmas.

They tell the child

to discover the world already there

and of the hundred

they steal ninety-nine.

They tell the child

that work and play

reality and fantasy,

science and imagination,

sky and earth,

reason and dream

are things

that do not belong together.

And thus they tell the child

that the hundred is not there.

The child says:

No way

The Hundred is there.

As we have our second lot of Learning Conversations I ask you to reflect on this poem and ask yourself how is my child growing as a learner?

During the learning conversations you will be given access to PAM – the Parent Access Module or our Learning Management System.  From PAM you will be able to access what your child is learning, results from assessment tasks and over all reporting each semester.

Bookings for these will be made available soon using SignUp, as we have used before.  Once PAM is up and going we will be able to make bookings from there.  Learning Conversations are compulsory for all students and will be held on June 11, 12, and 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Have you made your appointment yet?

Thank you to those students that represented St Anne’s College at the Cross Country Running and Winter sports.  There were many personal bests and outstanding participation and achievements.  Our soccer team were over all winners and we wait the next phase of their participation. All students were respectful, did their best and were successful.

Happy Birthday...

Congratulations to any birthday celebrants since our last edition and before the next – we hope you enjoy your special day.  We have no record of student birthdays this fortnight - if you have had a birthday we hope it was a happy occasion.

Something to ponder…'We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.
