In the classrooms

Year 11 English

On Monday 25th February Year 11 students were invited to attend a lunchtime panel discussion facilitated by Ms Pauline Cowland and Ms Kym Dempsey.  The panel consisted of some Baimbridge College teachers who were willing to share their own experiences of being a migrant.  Students directed many thoughtful questions to panel members.  We are sure that the discussion enhanced not only student’ understanding of migrant experiences, but also of the backgrounds and motivations of some familiar and some new faces at the College.

Thank you to the HDSC for the use of the theatrette. Thank you to all the Year 11 students who gave up their lunchtime to enhance their learning. Thank you to Mr Alan Thomas (from Wales) Ms Samanthi Senaviratne (from Sri Lanka), Ms Hazel Weir (from England), Mr Hong Nguyen (from Vietnam) and Mr Steven DeMan (from The Netherlands – Holland) for sharing their stories so honestly and openly.  There is no doubt it helped our Year 11 English students better understand what it means to leave, what it means to arrive and what it means to stay.

Year 11 English classes are currently studying Joyful Strains, an anthology of 27 memoirs written by Australian migrants.  Exploring the text has led to some thought-provoking discussions about understanding our own identities and our own life stories.  To enhance student understanding of the memoir genre, students were asked to create a six-word memoir – a simple but effective method for students to express the essence of their own lives.  As well as crafting the text, students were encouraged to creatively select colours, images, font types and sizes to enhance their memoir.  Ms Cowland, Ms Dempsey and Ms Weir were impressed by students’ ability to capture their individual essence in just six words.  We received so many innovative submissions and have shared some special ones with you.

Students use three-dimensional drawing methods such as paraline and perspective to create three-dimensional freehand drawings that maintain proportion. On completion of this unit the students should be able to create drawings for different purposes using a range of drawing methods, media and materials e.g. pencils, markers, airbrush and 3D Autodesk Maya.

Year 9 & 10 First Aid

We snuck in and took a sneaky pic of Mr Hill this week, he was busy showing his class of First Aiders the school defibulator and how it operates.  With classes such as these where students receive their CPR certificate we offer real life skills along with qualifications, not to mention a good number of students acroos the school and into the community who can help if you need it.

Year 8 Chinese

If you notice staff clothes getting a tad small it may be to do with all of the dumplings we have been consuming! Mr tan and Gabby have been very busy with their classes making delicious dumplings to celebrate the Spring Festival.

Students have also been busy in class being introduced to the new language - pictured are Year 8C students presenting the Chinese Pinyin 4 tones from left to right.
