Novelist Online Visit

Randa Abdel-Fattah

We had our first PHSC author visit via Skype with Sydney based author Randa Abdel-Fattah. Randa is the author of young adult fiction including her novel When Michael Met Mina, a novel Year 7s have studied in their English classes.

Randa has a very impressive CV. She is a lawyer, a human rights advocate, a community volunteer, and a researcher – she has a PhD in sociology. And of course, she is a writer. Randa studies Islamophobia, racism and multiculturalism in Australia.

Today she spoke to all Year 7s about her experience as a Muslim in Australia particularly in the context of the Gulf War and the September 11 attacks. She talked to students about her personal experiences of racism, her activism for change and as a motivation and inspiration for her stories.

Well done to the student audience who asked lots of interesting questions.

Thanks to our IT support staff Eli Robey and John Cousens assistance making sure the technology worked.
