Principal's message

Dear Parents, Carers and Students

I hope that all is well with our school community. The transition to onsite learning continues to go well and it is a joy to see the students interacting with each other once again. There has been some disruption to the timetable as we work around the STEAM build but the students and teachers have been very accommodating.

I have been occasionally asked why a STEAM Centre?  What does it represent to MGSC?  My belief is that it represents investigation, exploration and discovery.  We pride ourselves on being a school where every girl from everyone experiences success and this STEAM Centre is another piece of the unique puzzle that we create here at MGSC.   As someone who has worked in girls’ schools for over 25 years, I have observed that girls are more likely to study science and maths subjects than girls in co-educational schools. They also have a higher degree of self-efficacy and self-confidence in these areas and have greater opportunities to take on leadership roles than their co-educational counterparts.

The STEAM Centre will bring together science, technology, robotics, coding, mathematics, visual arts and design thinking skills. Our students will be able to immerse themselves in these spaces, engage with their learning and make connections between these areas. We expect the project to be completed by the end of November this year and fully operational at the beginning of next year. There is still time to contribute to our Building Fund to enable us to continue to enhance our school facilities as we are nearing the end of the financial year. As we fund all of our major works in the school, any additional contributions that can be made will be most welcome and invested in facilities for our students.

I was very pleased to be in the audience for the first VCE Theatre Studies performance on Thursday 4 June called, The River, the Dirt and Us. Due to constraints in relation to visitors to the school and audience numbers, it was attended by some staff. Given that the students had very little time to rehearse together they did an outstanding job on the night and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The talents at MGSC are not just limited to our students.  Lisa Blumenstein, our Visual Arts Domain Leader and teacher of Media Studies has won the people's choice award for her photograph of our teachers, Bill Murray, Dylan Reeves and Lauren Caridi. You can still view it on: OptiKA-2019-Online/Lisa-Blumenstein. The background to the photo is that these teachers represent the different generations through time, their boundless enthusiasm for education and the camaraderie found in this challenging and rewarding profession.  Congratulations to Lisa for this achievement.

Kind regards

Linda Brown

Flag Raising

Our Junior student leaders have resumed raising the flags near the front entrance. There is a roster to ensure the two flags go up and come down each school day.  Thank you for your service.
