Reminder for Parents

Primary Campus and Secondary Campus foyers:

Students are not to use these areas to wait in before school or after school. It is expected students will be on their way home by 3.30 pm.

Any student on the Primary Campus not collected will be sent to OSHC (Out of School Hours Care).

We have staff on Yard Duty before school from 8:45 am, and after school until 3:30 pm.  Due to other responsibilities staff are unable to provide supervision outside these times.

Please also be aware the Primary Campus office will close at 4:00 pm each day.

Students waiting for collection at the end of the day will be directed to the concrete leaves at the front of the school and early arrivals will need to find an undercover spot to play.

Please support us in making sure all students are safe.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2020

Dear Parents/Carers, The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge opened just as we moved to Home Learning and as our public libraries closed. At The Lakes, our students are registered and the class teachers can provided each student with their username and password.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 4th September 2020.

Children from Foundation to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ at least 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are ‘challenged’ to read at least 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Top tips for discussing COVID-19 with children, from the Australian Psychological Society:

 Speak to them about coronavirus in a calm manner.

 Ask them what they already know about the virus so you can clarify any misunderstandings they may have.

 Let them know that it is normal to experience some anxiety when new and stressful situations arise.

 Give them a sense of control by explaining what they can do to stay safe (e.g. wash their hands regularly, stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing).

 Not overwhelming them with unnecessary information (e.g. death rates) as this can increase their anxiety.

 Reassure them that coronavirus is less common and severe in children compared with adults.

Book Club

Welcome back! Issue 4 of Book Club is out now. Years 3-6 should receive their catalogues when they return to school next week. Alternatively, you can check out the catalogue online at www.scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents. Spare catalogues are available in both libraries.

The due date is only just over a week away, with all orders needing to be in by June 15th at the latest. If you wish to order online using the LOOP platform, please ensure you have selected the correct campus. If your child’s class doesn’t come up, you’re in the wrong place.

Happy reading!
