35th Anniversary - Looking Back

With students numbers surpassing 1100, and a change in leadership, the mid to late 1990s were a busy time at Nazareth College.

1995

  • 10th Anniversary Gala held at Dallas Brookes Hall, with performances by both students and staff.
  • 10th Anniversary Mass held at St Patrick's Cathedral.
  • QLT (Quality Learning and Teaching) Programme was established in conjunction with St Elizabeth's Primary School and St Gerard's Primary School.

1996

  • The upstairs staffroom was constructed and Student Services Office area was upgraded.
  • The Bullying and Harrassment Policy was established.
  • The College received a grant to build a Japanese-style garden.  The garden was designed by Year 12 Graphics students and created by Year 11 VCAL students.
  • Chisholm House won all three House Carnivals.
  • Staff attended a two and a half day Conference looking at how IT will be integrated into all aspects of teaching and learning.  How far we have come!
  • The first Arts-in-Sync was held (this was the predecessor of Showcase).
  • A number of students took part in the Cubby House Challenge which was held during the annual Timber and Working with Wood Show, held at the (then new) Exhibition Centre.  The cubby house they built was donated to St Gerard's Primary School.
  • Founding Principal, Mr Paul D'Astoli, said goodbye to Nazareth as he took up a post at Thomas Carr College, Hoppers Crossing.

1997

  • Nazareth welcomed Mr Gregory Clarke as the new Principal.
  • Nazareth Day had a make over, with the emphasis on fun.  A talent show was held, as well as Mass and the activities and food stalls.
  • Nazareth won the SIS Athletics Carnival.
  • MacKillop won the House Cross Country Carnival, while Chisholm won the House Athletics.
  • Extra curricular activities continued, with debating, public speaking, chess and Duke of Edinburgh Award.
  • A study tour to Italy was undertaken, while 12 Year 10 students and two staff went to Singapore.
  • Plans for a gymnasium and other upgrades were started.

1998

  • Land was purchased for the new gym and Chapel. Plans were lodged with the City of Greater Dandenong Council for the gymnasium.
  • Author John Marsden visited the Year 8s.
  • International students numbered 51, and came from Brazil, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Phillipines, Poland, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.
  • The House Arts competition was launched.
  • Science students took part in the Science Talent Search, Science Club, Physics Olympiad and Physics Gymnasium.
  • Chisholm won the House Swimming and House Athletics Carnivals.
  • Nazareth won the SIS Chess Championship for the fourth year in a row.

1999

  • Nazareth won the SIS Athletics Carnival
  • The school production was 'The Wiz'.
  • The school was restructured into two areas - The Middle School (Years 7-9) and The Senior School (Years 10-12).
  • CEPD (Christian Education for Personal Development) was launched.  The Year 7 cohort were the first to experience this programme.
  • Computer systems and hardware were upgraded in readiness for the new millennium.
  • Former Nazareth student, Joanne Accom, was a guest judge for the Talent Quest held on Nazareth Day.  Joanne had success with her single, 'Jackie' which reached #3 on the Australian Aria charts.
  • Chisholm won all three House Carnivals again.
