DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES - CURRICULUM OPTIONS

THE GREAT BAKE OFF (FOOD) 

Have you ever wondered what makes a cake rise, how to make crispy biscuits, how to bake a moist cake, what are the best ingredients for a sausage roll or what makes the pastry on a sausage roll so crispy? Do you know what the importance of yeast is in a pizza? Perhaps you want to bake and decorate a celebration cake or even create tasty and appetising food for a special event. This unit will introduce you to these concepts and more! Food Safety and Hygiene and using the Technology Process to develop ideas and produce food products are important aspects of the concepts covered. You will get opportunities to work in groups and to work individually while developing your food skills and techniques.

DESIGN LIFE

Design Life is about using your design skills in a variety of community and College-based projects. See your designs be brought to life and used in real situations. Learn how to create and develop pleasing aesthetics in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. This course is perfect for those new to Design and for those who have existing skills they want to develop. Design Life is also a great subject to prepare for Year 11 subjects Design, Applied Information Technology (AIT) and Visual Art.

MORE THAN A GAMER?

This course is your opportunity to look at computer games over the decades and to learn how to plan, design and build a computer game. The course will be focusing on building skills in GameMaker, Unity and Java Script. There is also the opportunity to build on your own programming skills in any programming language. There is a strong focus on design and project management in addition to programming skills. This course can lead to skills required in Applied Information Technology (AIT), Computer Science and Design.

A consumables charge will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.

3D DESIGN IN WOOD

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Then this is the course for you. In this course you will design and produce functional and creative projects such as small items of furniture from wood. This will be done using a combination of traditional and modern techniques and equipment, in an ethical and sustainable manner. This includes the use of the laser cutter/engraver, vinyl cutter, 3D printers and scanner to further enhance/optimise the learning experience. This course will also provide the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to undertake the Year 11 /12 Furniture-making Certificate. 

A consumables charge will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.

 

 

BEYOND SELFIES 

Beyond Selfies is a beginner’s course in taking your photography skills to the next level. You will learn how to improve your composition, use camera modes beyond automatic and learn how to manipulate your images in Adobe Photoshop. You will also learn how to use Adobe InDesign to develop eye catching portfolios and online blogs. Year 9 students and students with no or little experience will learn some essential photography skills. Students who have completed Photography in Year 9 will get the opportunity to revisit some techniques in new exciting activities and further skills needed for Year 11 and 12 studies.

FASHION DESIGN

In Fashion Design you will design and create your own decorative patterns that will be transferred to swatches of fabric in a variety of ways, including digital printing and screen-printing. You will design and illustrate a small fashion range inspired by your own surface pattern design and use your printed fabric to construct a simple garment or accessory. You will learn about the concepts behind ‘haute couture’ fashion and how fashion designers and the clothing industry operate, from small fashion-houses to large factories.

TASTE THE WORLD (COOKING AND CULTURE)

The foods we eat may be determined by our social customs, climate and geography. It is very difficult to talk about food without mentioning culture. Traditional cuisine is passed down and is a way of preserving culture. Importantly, what we eat and where we live are related. Looking after our environment, eating sustainably and nutritionally are important aspects of food choice. In this unit you will be able to discover culture and the relationships with food and produce foods from a wide range of countries and culture, including Australia. Develop an understanding of food and sustainability and eating local. Tasks will include developing foods for an International Banquet and creating your own Paddock to Plate recipe. Techniques, skills and practices for a variety of different cultural cuisines will be a focus.

PRO DESIGN

In Pro Design you will learn industry standard design skills and procedures. You will develop your skills in software from the Adobe Creative Suite while completing innovative and exciting design challenges. Possible projects could include hand lettering and typography, packaging design, poster and print design, logos and corporate profiles. This course is perfect for those new to Design and for those who have existing skills they want to develop. Pro Design is also a great subject to prepare for Year 11 subjects Design, Certificate III in Visual Arts, Applied Information Technology and Visual Art. A consumables charge will be applied to this course. This will be charged in addition to Tuition Fees.

HACKING DONE RIGHT (CYBER SECURITY)

As our world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, companies and individuals are realising the importance of protecting themselves from the growing threat of cyber-attacks. This course aims to equip students with the skills necessary for being responsible citizens in a digital future. This course will involve a large amount of skills-based practical activities and cyber security puzzles. Throughout the course you will examine the fundamental principles of how information is stored and communicated via a computer network. You will then be able to investigate the potential vulnerabilities in computer systems and the avenues through which attackers exploit them. You will consider methods to keep information secure and how to safely transmit it across a network and explore a variety of practical means by which attackers can disrupt systems and gain unauthorised access to information.

PHOTOSHOP ME

Photoshop Me is a course in digital manipulation, portrait photography and creativity. You will learn how to take better photos using studio and natural lighting. This course has a focus on learning Adobe Photoshop, basic skills and more advanced. You will take ordinary portraits and turn them into works of art. This course is perfect for those new to Photography and Photoshop and for those who have existing skills they want to develop.

MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY 

In this course, you will be applying the Technology Process to design, produce and evaluate projects using a variety of materials, such as wood, metal and plastic. You will gain experience in using the available tools and equipment at the College, with a strong focus on safety. You will develop skills in the use of traditional fixed machinery, portable power tools and hand tools in the wood/metal workshops. This will be further enhanced with the equipment available in the technology hub. This includes the use of the laser cutter/engraver, vinyl cutter, 3D printers and scanner to further enhance/optimise learning outcomes. Projects are undertaken throughout the Semester, each with a different focus. If you enjoy making things with your hands, this is the course for you.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION

Did you know that the fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world? Do you love clothing and wonder what you can do about it? In this class you will learn basic sewing skills so that you can upcycle and refashion existing clothing. You will be going on an excursion to second-hand stores to buy clothing which you will transform into new garments and/or accessories and experiment with a variety of methods to construct and decorate fabrics.
