Bug Hunting
GEKA Caulfield South Kindergarten Educators
Children are very much interested into bugs and insects after the online excursion on mini beasts. Every week we are learning some fun facts and characteristics of the insects at the kindergarten.
At home children can look for bugs in their own garden or in their backyards. At home children can look for bugs in their own garden or in their backyards.
Children can identify different insects and to think about what colours they are, where they live, what they eat and how many legs do they have?
Children can draw their favourite insect or create their own bugs from natural materials like leaves and twigs.
Children can also make bugs with recycled materials for example: making caterpillar from egg cartons or bottle caps.
Bug hunt activity will encourage children to explore their own backyard in an open-ended way that will lead to adventures and imaginative play.

The educators have been talking about the changes we have noticed in children’s play since returning to kindergarten. One of these changes is a noticeable increase in children engaging in role playing ‘office work’ talking on phones, typing on keyboards, taking notes and organising different roles for players in small groups. With many parents having to work from home we are wondering whether this is the reason children are keen to explore these ideas through their play as they develop their understanding of the world around them. This play is a wonderful way to encourage language skills as children engage in reciprocal conversations with peers and adults. To support this play we have included in the learning environment office supplies such as keyboard, notebooks, pens, phones, staplers and hole punchers.
