Wellbeing

The Junior children have been back at school for 9 days now. What are some of the things we have noticed about how children have settled in? Have there been changes? Growth?

As parents you were notfied that we were easing children back into routines through developmental play and a focus on wellbeing. Coming back this term was unlike coming back from Summer holidays ready to begin an exciting new year in a new year level.  As teachers we  knew that we would have to be aware of strong emotions such as anxiety or frustration that some children might feel.

The Junior teachers have done an amazing job of reassuring children this week. Of course as 'data driven' teachers we are eager to know ‘what reading level they are at’ etc. however we knew there were far more important factors to consider as children arrived at school last Tuesday.

So this is what we, at school, have noticed so far!

Resilience: Children have coped. They, with your support, have gone through a challenging period and many have come out trusting themselves as learners and really understanding how a positive growth mindset can make a difference in handling challenges and believing yourself and in your success.

Independence: Many children have been given a new level of independence both with their learning and with expectations at home. Becoming more independent is a step towards shaping your identity and developing self-efficacy.

Gratitude: Children have come back thankful. They have been pleased to see friends and have acknowledged that they love being back at school and learning. Gratitude and thankfulness help to develop self and social awareness.

If the past 6 weeks has helped develop resilience, independence and gratitude in young children at our school then their personal and interpersonal growth has been huge!
