Wirraway Camp

In week 2, our year 5 and year 6 students travelled to Strathalbyn for a 2-night camp at Wirraway Homestead.

It was a great opportunity for all to step outside of their comfort zones and try activities such as horse riding, archery and even whip cracking!

A big thank you to our staff and parent volunteers for their time, energy and care. Without this, our students would not have had this amazing experience. Thank you to Brayden Martin, Brianna Ling, Meagan Howie, Keely Lyons, Meredith Tilley, Geoff Smith, Andrew Cotton, Paul Golledge, Rachel Hartwell, Tammy Lamey, Rikki-Lee Snoad, Courtney Hermsen, Natalie Polvari, Daniel Hasler, Kathryn Denniss and Kathryn Walsh.

Students spoke about their camp experience at our assembly in week 5. Here is what they had to say:

In Week 2 of this term, Year 5 and 6 students went away to camp for two nights. We went down to Wirraway Homestead, which is about an hour and a half away on a bus. When we were at camp, we got to spend lots of time with our friends and also do a lot of really fun activities.

We had two days full of action-packed adventures and got the chance to: go horse riding, herd sheep around a paddock, do archery, go for a bushwalk, do a ropes course, and do lots of other fun activities and games as well. We'd now like to share some of our highlights with you.

My  favourite bit about camp was definitely the sheep herding. We all had so much fun trying to bark at the sheep so they would move, but we discovered it wasn't working. We had a discussion on what method to use to get the sheep in the paddock we needed them in, so we all worked on one idea and it worked. As we were coming back from sheep herding we all got a bit of a fright when we saw a baby brown snake and some boys nearly stepped on it.

The best bit about camp for me was the pool table. I liked playing against people, and I actually won one of the games. It actually seemed to flow with me. The ball would just woosh around the table, though sometimes it would end up in the hole and people would get two shots. It was a lot of fun spending time with my friends, and I can't wait to go to camp next year at high school.

The biggest highlight at camp for me was definitely horse riding. It was really fun. I even got the horse I wanted - her name was Hope. We went around in circles and we even got the horses to trot, which means they go really fast. My horse was a marvellous one and was one of my favorite horses in the world. Another funny moment at camp for me was when I fell over face first in the mud on a different activity.

My favorite part at camp was when we got to do archery because it was a good challenge. We had six arrows each, and once we had shot all of our arrows, we would go to go collect them. Some of them were hard to find, but once we had collected all of them, we all went back and tried again. We had to try and aim at a small can and a few other targets, and one of my group members hit it! It took us a lot of tries, but we all hit a target by the end.

Having free time with friends was really fun because we could go on the trampolines, go to the oval to play games with balls or chasey, try to get people off the slippery pole with pillow fights, or go to the shed to play pool or carpet ball. But my absolute personal favourites were the horseshoe challenge and going down to the horse arena to pat and brush the horses!

But what was really fun was spending time with our friends in our dorms at night time, talking about our day and having a great time getting ready for bed when everyone was wandering around the dorms happily not even knowing what we were doing because we were so sore and tired!

My biggest highlight of camp was when we got to go bush walking because me and my friends got to see someone pretend to get bitten by a snake, and we had to save him by telling the instructor what to do. Just before that had happened, we got to yell cooey out into the forest. Even though some of us didn’t have the best echoing ability, the people building huts heard us and started dancing for some reason. When we had to go back, somebody dared me to step into a huge puddle that went up to the middle of my shin, so I did. It definitely wasn’t the best idea because I had a soaking wet shoe for the rest of the day.

As you can tell, we all had a lot of fun at camp. Having three days of great activities and spending time with our friends was definitely something we won't forget. Our Year 5 & 6 students represented our school really well, and we even had the lady running the camp tell our teachers that we were the best school overall that they've had in the 4 years she's been working there!

We'd like to take this chance to say a huge thank you to our Year 5/6 teachers, the parent volunteers who came to camp, and all the school staff who helped organise our camp for us! We all really enjoyed ourselves at camp this year, and we hope that all the students in Year 4 and 5 are looking forward to going away to camp next year as well.
