3/4 B

Week 7 Term 2

Education in Faith

Last week the Year 4s celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion participated in a morning workshop with myself, Ms Marion and Ms Vanessa. It was a beautiful reflective morning that covered a range of different things. In the first activity we looked at the Passover and story of the Last Supper. The students participated in a guided meditation and shared grape juice and unleavened bread. All of the students have been given a small job for the occasion and over the coming week they will have an opportunity to practice at school and in the Church. Fr Chinua visited them in the afternoon and they will visit him next week in the church as well.

Writing

We have continued to look into informative writing as part of our literacy program. Last week we completed a group activity whereby we needed to group different facts and find out whether they belonged to an object (smartphone), person (astronaut) or animal (shark). Once we grouped the facts we needed to locate its heading around the classroom and then place those facts under specific sub headings. Grouping some of the facts and placing them under sub headings proved a good challenge for some groups.

Inquiry

We have now started our Inquiry project. The students are working in pairs and are researching and completing tasks about one of three explorers; Christopher Columbus, Vasco de Gama or Ferdinand Magellan. Now that we have completed some research we will create a timeline and map of their specific voyagers.

Maths

This week we started our work on time. Over the next two weeks we will be using a solo taxonomy to help guide our learning.

A solo taxonomy is a systematic way that describes how learners' understanding build from easy to difficult while learning different tasks or subjects (in this case 'time').

How does solo taxonomy work?

Using solo taxonomy involves learners in their own differentiation and makes the process behind learning explicit. It highlights the difference between surface and deep understanding, helping students understand where they are on that spectrum, and what they need to do to progress to the next level.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Kind regards, Brendan.
