Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

We have been busy finishing up a Unit of Inquiry and starting up a new one. Students are diligently working through learning new concepts in Reading, Writing and Maths and are becoming more confident with prior concepts as time goes on.

Reading

Over the past few weeks, students have been working on the skill of inferring. Inferring requires students to use their prior knowledge of information stated in a text to draw conclusions. Students inferred to pictures, illustrations and text based on prompts about their feelings, what is happening and what might happen beyond what is seen. Students used their thinking skills to search texts and find evidence to support their understandings.

Writing

In Writing, students concluded their work on information reports. Students finalised their information reports about a natural disaster of their choice, delving into the writer’s process with an emphasis on the importance of editing. With the conclusion of this unit, students then started to build their understandings about persuasive writing, which is our next unit. Students began to learn about persuasive language and how to convince someone of their opinion.

Maths

Students began fluid groups, focusing on strategies in addition. They will continue to learn about vertical, split and number-lines throughout the next few weeks. Additionally, students began to learn about location and transformation, exploring concepts including flips/slides/turns and clockwise/anti-clockwise motions.

Inquiry

Students finalised their unit on natural disasters, creating impressive information reports through various formats physically and online. Students are now moving onto the next unit which is 'People Care For The Places They Are Connected To’. Students began to investigate this topic by creating a Minecraft world based on a place they connect to in real life. It is fantastic to see how involved students are in this process of making a land and inviting other students to join.
