Year One

Dear Year One families.

We are excited to share with you the latest updates from our Year Onclasses. We have been busy diving into our new Line of Inquiry, How We Organise Ourselves that investigates the process of how food is transformed from farm to plate.

We have also been exploring other exciting concepts such as procedural texts in Literacy and directional language in Maths.

Reading

In Reading our students have been working on their comprehension skills, including making Text-to-World connections and sequencing events from a narrative. They have been engaged in reading activities that encourage them to think critically and deeply about the text, and to draw connections between their own experiences and the themes presented in the text.

In addition, students have continued their great enjoyment creating procedural texts. They have explored these texts through language experiences, ‘How to Make Fairy Bread’, in which they had a lot of fun making and eating the delicious treat! This week they will be investigating How to Make a Smoothie and what steps this involves.

These activities have helped the Year Ones to develop their writing skills about text organisation and given them the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a real-world context.

Maths

Year One students have been exploring directional language and applying it to problem-solving activities. They have been challenged to think creatively and solve problems using their understanding of directional language.

Such activities have included writing instructions to locate a hidden object in the classroom and coding Bee Bots to reach a particular destination.

We have also been unpacking strategies to solve worded subtraction problems and creating our own subtraction stories. These activities have supported our Year Ones to develop their critical thinking skills and to approach problem-solving in an engaging way.

Inquiry

As part of our Unit of Inquiry 3 is our ‘Farm to Plate’ unit, we are beginning to identify the difference between plant and animal-based foods. By understanding the difference between plant and animal foods and allows our students to make more informed choices about the foods we eat.

It has also been a great opportunity to explore how foods are packaged and how we can become more sustainability savvy in the way we package our lunches for school. Linking into our current school challenge of Waste Free Wednesdays!

Special Celebration

We concluded the week by participating in a whole school reconciliation walk in recognition of National Sorry Day. We learned about the significance about the day and created Aboriginal flags in support of the event. We hope our participation in the reconciliation walk will inspire greater empathy and understanding among our community.
