On Friday 5 May, the school fielded two Year 12 Boys teams in the Mensline Netball Cup hosted by James Sheahan Catholic High school. Initiated by JSCHS and Orange High School in 2022, the Cup supports the charity Mensline which raises funds and awareness for men’s mental health. This year Kinross Wolaroi joined the competition, and we are hoping to continue to support this fundraiser in future years.
Both of our teams played three games each, playing well-trained JSCHS and OHS teams. Despite limited experience and understanding of court play, the boys rallied, learning the rules on the way, and competing with drive and spirit. Unfortunately, neither team progressed to the semi-finals. Despite this, each team left the event with new experiences, new friendships, memories, and the understanding they contributed to a great cause.
It was an amazing effort by all involved, especially JSCHS staff and students who led the fundraising effort with the event raising over $2500.
Overall, the Kinross Wolaroi boys were a credit to the school, and we thank all the supporters that came out to watch and cheer the boys on.
We look forward to taking part again next year.
Congratulations to Oscar McLaughlin - Year 12, Niamh Webster - Year 11, and Minnie Whittle - Year 8 on their extraordinary performance in The School of Rock Musical presented by the Orange Theatre Company. The energy and passion that you brought to the stage was truly infectious, and it was clear that you put your heart and soul into every moment of the production. Bravo!
Last Wednesday in KWS Conversations, Harry Coady Year 12 raised the enduring disgrace of racism and hate speech. We discussed how people of colour generally were appreciated as individuals yet could be vilified as a collective, and we despaired at the ongoing racist language in sport. We gained insight from Maka Mutyiri, Year 12 regarding the impact of casual racism and stereotyping, and we all reflected on our own capacity to stand up against racism in our community. The event was well attended and again provided an opportunity to discuss a serious social issue in a calm and safe space.
Last Friday we had our first Gatho: a Prefect led assembly designed to increase student unity and a sense of belonging to Kinross Wolaroi. Our Head Prefects, Hugh Thompson, Greta Bourne, Fletcher Smith and Anna-Louise Limbers introduced themselves and outlined the purpose of the Gathos. Harry Coady of Year 12 was presented with the first ever ‘Kinrossian’ – a badge awarded to a student who is recognised for being a good person. We sang happy birthday to Shep Taylor of Year 11 and generally bonded as a school community. The Gathos will take place every fortnight.
Since the beginning of Term 2, the Senior School has seen an increase in students and staff testing positive to COVID-19. Whilst the school is currently under no restrictions, families and staff are asked to remain home if unwell and return when symptom free.
