Instrumental Music

On behalf of the Instrumental Music team, we are delighted to share with you the remarkable experiences our piano and violin students had during two music excursions that took place in May.  On the 2nd of May, a group of 21 talented piano and violin students embarked on an enchanting musical adventure at the renowned Hanson Dyer Hall in Ian Potter Southbank Centre. They had the privilege of attending the evening concert titled "Frei Aber Einsam: a Salute to Violinist Joseph Joachim."

The concert featured the exceptional talents of pianist Benjamin Martin and violinist Curt Thomas. The performance was a mesmerizing tribute to the celebrated violinist, Joseph Joachim. Our students were captivated by the virtuosity and musicality displayed on stage, as these gifted musicians transported them to a realm of musical brilliance.

In addition to the concert, our students were given a unique opportunity to observe and witness the behind-the-scenes magic of a Conservatorium orchestra. At the Kenneth Myer Auditorium, they were able to watch dedicated Conservatorium orchestral students rehearse and practice. The auditorium's open viewing glass provided a glimpse into the meticulous preparation and collaborative efforts required to create a flawless musical performance. Our students were truly inspired by the dedication and commitment they witnessed, and many expressed a newfound determination to elevate their own musical skills.

Moving forward to the 22nd of May, another group of 47 enthusiastic piano and violin students attended the Conservatorium Chamber Music Competition held at Melba Hall, located within The University of Melbourne. This event showcased the finalists of the 2023 Conservatorium Chamber Music Competition. The competition allowed current university Music students to form small ensembles with their peers and present a carefully chosen musical work in the Melba Hall Lunch Hour Concert Series. Our students were treated to an array of performances, featuring various ensembles such as a string quartet, saxophone quartet, and sextet for piano and wind quintet.

The diversity of instruments and the seamless synergy between the musicians captivated the audience, leaving an imprint on our students' musical aspirations. Witnessing the passion and skill of these talented musicians fuelled their own desire to explore different musical forms and collaborate with fellow musicians.

These excursions have provided students with invaluable experiences and have undoubtedly sparked their imagination and passion for music.

As we look to the future, we eagerly anticipate another Music excursion coming up in September, watching MSO open rehearsal at Hamer Hall, Southbank. We would like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr Dedes, Ms De La Fuente and Ms Turok for accompanying and supporting students in these excursions. We congratulate the good manners and amazing behaviour from the instrumental students in these excursions. We will witness the musical growth and development from all of you.
