As the end of term fast approaches, we look back at Term 2 and reflect on some of our favourite library activities.
In May, as part of our Excellence and High Abilities Program, the library staff organised, popular Young Adult author, Oliver Phommavanh, to present to all Year 7 students. We were extra excited about Oliver’s visit as this was the first time our library had hosted such a big event since our recent renovation. His visit also supported the library’s Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge reading program. In the afternoon session, Oliver ran a Writer’s Workshop with over forty students who expressed an interest in creative writing. Please see below for a separate article from Year 7 student Lucy Costanzo, outlining her reaction to Oliver’s visit.
The library in June has seen a flurry of activity with giant chess games being played each lunchtime. Over thirty students and staff put their names down to participate in the giant chess games. Crowds of enthusiastic spectators supported their friends and teachers each lunchtime with the biggest crowd turning up to see the match of the week featuring Year 12 student George Hanzinikolas and our college principal Mr. Dedes. In a closely fought battle, George took home the victory in the final minutes of lunchtime. Thank you to Mr. Blackie for organising the loan of the giant chess pieces.
Students are reminded that the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is happening again! With the holidays around the corner and lots of available time for reading, any student who would like to participate in the challenge this year is reminded that they can access the VPRC website from the star icon on Compass using their EDUPASS login credentials. Please see a library staff member if you require more information.
To celebrate the end of term, the TLSC Stage Band will be performing at lunchtime in the library, and we look forward to the live music performance featuring our talented music students. Our thanks go to Mr. Vasilevski and Mr. Latomanski for supporting the band to perform in the library.
Don’t forget that the library is open before school, recess, lunchtime and after school until 4:30 Monday to Thursday and 3:30pm on a Friday. Please encourage your students to use this time, to pop into the library for a great book recommendation, ICT question, research guidance or just to ‘hang out’ in our fun, safe and inclusive environment.

Hi, I’m Lucy Costanzo and I am so excited that I was chosen to share my experience at the Oliver Phommavanh lecture and workshop.
First of all, I would like to talk about how interesting and intriguing the lecture and workshop was. I am an aspiring author myself and found that his approach to showing us the strategies and skills to become better at planning stories, made me more confident to try and write my own.
Secondly as a year 7 cohort we got to collaborate and share with each other, helping us think of even more ideas, as well as using hard topics like our worst fears and turning them into a good story about overcoming them.
Lastly Oliver Phommavanh gave us an amazing opportunity to not only be inspired by the workshop but be inspired by the amazing people and ideas around us.
Overall, I really enjoyed and had a massive take away from his lecture and workshop and I am grateful that Miss Green, Miss Earl and everyone else involved in his appearance gave us this wonderful chance to meet and interact with Mr. Phommavanh .
