CELEBRATION OF LEARNING @ ST. FIDELIS
Thank you to all who attended the celebration of learning afternoon and to the teachers who have worked tirelessly to ensure the students had this opportunity to share their learning. As I walked around the learning spaces, it was great to see the smiles on the student's faces and the look of pride as they shared achievements. The learning on display was impressive, and the students should be very proud of their efforts.
Our next celebration of learning will be our STEM show. The students will present their learning from our next Inquiry. Next term’s Inquiry will focus on Design and Creativity.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. The theme this year was Be a Voice for Generations. The theme encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise. Over the last week, the students explored the theme of reconciliation through rich authentic picture storybooks. I also had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 1/2 students to the Campbell Turnbull Library to explore the library and books written by Indigenous authors. Thank you to the parents who helped us on the day and carried all the books we borrowed.
Cultural Day Reminder - This Friday, 9th June
Join us to celebrate the cultures that thrive within our vibrant community. It is an opportunity to come together to experience the art and music of various ethnic groups and celebrate our heritage and the beauty that lies within our differences. I can’t wait to see the costumes, traditional dress and colourful outfits. See you all at the parade at 9 am. If weather permits, we will be in the Hawthorn yard.
Storytime continues to grow in numbers each week! Last Monday we listened to the story about “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle and then we set about decorating our very own caterpillar. Together we played inside and at the end of the session, we had an opportunity to play out in the playground. So much fun happens in Storytime each week.
What’s happening in Sustainability
Our learners have been busy preparing our garden beds for our winter vegetables. At the beginning of the term, the children planted a variety of seeds in seed trays. We planted cabbage, spinach, broccolini and snow pea seeds. These seeds have grown into little plants and are now ready to be planted in our garden beds. We can’t wait for our winter vegetables to grow.
Thank you
A very big thank you to Franca and Walter Mariotti, grandparents of Alexander Mariotti in Year 3/4 for donating a selection of herbs and vegetables for our garden. We also extend our thanks to Mrs Wenckowski for her kind donation of a selection of garden tools.
Last week, our Year 5/6 learners continued designing, researching and documenting important facts about our proposed Indigenous Garden. They looked at various Indigenous artifacts that could be included in our garden and the significance of these artifacts.
SSV COBURG DISTRICT WINTER SPORT RESULTS
On Friday 2 June, St Fidelis’ Years 4/5/6 students participated in Round 3 of the SSV Coburg District Interschool Sports Competitions. In this round, St Fidelis hosted the Australian International Academy to play matches of Football, Netball and Soccer.
Once again, congratulations to all our teams on displaying wonderful sporting behaviour, teamwork and endeavour to their best.
As you may be aware, a large number of our team members were playing these games against an opposition team from another school for only the second time, so our teams’ performances are to be once again commended!
Special congratulations to the Year 4 students who represented our school in the football match. Their performances are to be commended. They played against opposition players who were two years older than them.

BUONGIORNO!
Salve a tutti! I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. In today’s newsletter, I would like to include some information about Italy’s National holiday that just took place last Friday 2nd June - 2 giugno:
LA FESTA DELLA REPUBBLICA
Here’s how La Festa della Repubblica, (Italy’s National Day) is celebrated in Rome and in Melbourne.
The Italian National Day holiday celebrates the establishment of the Italian Republic and the end of the monarchy on June 2nd 1946. As some of you may already know, a republic is a form of government in which the people elect, or choose, the leaders that will represent them. Italians celebrate this National Day by watching parades, fireworks, concerts, and sharing picnics with family and friends. Each year a wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome. The tomb was completed in 1924, and has an eternal flame. It was built to honour all of Italy’s fallen soldiers.
In Melbourne, there are many Italians who also celebrate the Italian National Day by attending a special mass at St Patricks’ Cathedral in the morning, (or usually the closest Sunday to the 2nd of June) and then perhaps attending a celebration at one of the many Italian Social Clubs, with formal speeches and then entertainment. From time to time, local celebrations can occur, especially down in Carlton, Melbourne’s Little Italy. I wonder if you or your family celebrated this day? If so, perhaps you took some photos, showing what you did. You might like to share them and I could then include them in the newsletter.

Also, just a reminder that this Friday 9th June, venerdì 9 giugno, we will be celebrating Cultural Day at St Fidelis. We are asking the children to please wear something that represents their family’s cultural heritage, eg. Italian, Greek, Malaysian, etc. The children can wear something creative, traditional or simply colours of the flag that represents their heritage…similar to our previous year’s Italian day parade, except this year it will also include other representations from other cultures. We will be having a parade at the beginning of the day, followed by various incursion performances including an indigenous performance as well as a Commedia dell’arte performance then concluded in the afternoon with cultural activities run by the classroom teachers.
This day will be a nice way to culminate the children’s Inquiry learning on Cultural Identity that they have been learning about throughout this semester in their class as well as part of my sessions as well.
We hope to see many lovely culturally diverse costumes on the day.
Buona giornata.
A presto.
