YEAR 8 VCD CURRICULUM CHANGES

2022 has seen a rewrite of the Year 8 Visual Communication Design curriculum. Students now use the isometric drawing method to develop a three dimensional, realized drawing in tone, outlined and with applied colour.

There are four components to the Task, which require a student to create, design and model the various stages of the design process for presentation.

Component 1: Generation of Ideas and an introduction to Isometric Drawing

Component 2: Development of typography design ideas

Component 3: Completion of a final Isometric Drawing of the students first name

Component 4: Experimentation with Digital 3D construction processes in Tinkercad

The design fields explored in these assessed four Tasks, are Communication Design and Industrial DesignCommunication Design is used to explore typographic design, type conventions, layouts, and the use of grids to presentation formats. Secondly, the Industrial Design Field of manual and digital three-dimensional drawing, through the method of isometric is explored.

Isometric Drawing is a three-dimensional representational drawing method. They are used by engineers and industrial/designers to create dimensionally accurate measurable drawings. Isometric drawings are constructed with sides that recede from each corner edge, at 30 degrees to the horizontal.

The included images are examples of work completed by this year's Year 8 VCD students.

EAST CAMPUS CERAMICS

Years 8 and 9 students have been busy creating ceramic pieces at the East Campus during the first few weeks of term. They have been patiently awaiting the set-up of the new kiln which is housed in a purpose built room off the ceramics room.

We are very pleased that the kiln is now up and running and student work is being fired. This first phase of firing is the ‘bisque’ firing. Year 9s will now add colour to their bisque fired work with underglazes and we will soon see these pieces come to life. As Year 8s finish their Theory Learning Task they will be underglazing and gloss glazing their ceramic characters.

YEAR 11 MEDIA

In the past several weeks, the Year 11 media class has been working on putting together a film trailer representing stereotypes in our chosen genres. This learning task has been our group's favourite so far in the term, as it allows us to use creative skills we haven't been able to use in past subjects before. The opportunity of borrowing high quality equipment from the library and being able to work in a group again after Covid-19 have been amazing to utilise. We were able to get together after school and film our scenes, as well as using class time effectively to discuss ideas and develop our folio.

Media is my favourite subject as I am able to express myself in ways that I didn't think was possible in a school setting. The absence of strict control on what we make can make is freeing when you get to VCE arts subjects, as in earlier years there was always restrictions and limiting guidelines on how far you and your topics can go, but now you can make whatever you envision, as long as you have the correct resources and time to do it.

The group work aspect has been the best by far, as my group all gets along and had loads of fun in the filming and class time discussion, even going on google meets when other members of the group were unable to attend school.

Media is a fantastic VCE subject that I would highly recommended to any junior students who are considering what VCE subjects to choose.
