PERFORMING ARTS

Welcome to the end of term 1.

There has been a lot happening within the Performing Arts areas over the last few weeks and I am so proud of the work that the students have undertaken.

Before we head into the holidays, I remind all students to take their instruments home to practice. The music storage areas will be open until 4pm on Friday at both campuses so students can come and collect their instruments.

SINGFEST

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the SEVR Singfest on Wednesday 30 March at Patterson River Secondary College. The day was conducted by Adam Przewlocki who encouraged the students to develop great sound, beautiful harmonies and blend between the voices.

Thank you to Ms Blanka West for organising this event, and to Mr Dmitry Serebrianik for accompanying the students.

TOP CLASS - THEATRE

On Monday 28 March, the Theatre Studies class of 2022 viewed the Top Monologues of 2021. The dedication and devotion of each actor and designer who was chosen was beyond outstanding, seeing each moment being so carefully depicted and conveyed on stage was truly inspiring. Even the written explanations were fine-tuned in each word and watching them gave me a great understanding of what a top-level performance should include.

Furthermore the energy and enthusiasm made me so excited for the end of the year, when I too will perform a monologue as part of my examination for Theatre Studies.

Overall, I think I can speak for the class when I say that the experience was very motivating and I want to thank Miss Angell for arranging the class to go and see it.

TOP CLASS - MUSIC

The Top Class showcase concerts were held on Monday 21 March this year. The Year 11 and 12 Music Performance classes were lucky enough to experience parts of these students' incredible programs.

The aim of these concerts is to inspire our own programs for the end of year recital which was certainly achieved. From grieving string quintets to soaring saxophonists the day was filled with musical expression, exceptional technique and extraordinary musicianship which we were able to take forward and utilise in our own interpretations.

WIND SYMPHONY REHEARSAL WEEKEND AND CONCERT

After a 3-year hiatus from band performances, the Wind Symphony of 2022 came together to once again display our musical talents. We were extremely excited to host two other incredible bands; the Mentone Girls SC Symphonic Band, and the Southern Area Concert Band.

Commencing the day with a rehearsal to recap the progress made in our Friday and Saturday workshops, we polished off our pieces and began preparing for the performance ahead. The theme of the concert was “From Dark to Light”, and it consisted of pieces such as “At Morning’s First Light” and “The Queen of the Night’s Aria” featuring Year 12 flute soloist Louisa D’Ambra. We also performed songs with the other bands, in what was an exciting culmination of talent which allowed us to bond with fellow musicians.

Unfortunately, an in-person audience was not a possibility for this concert, but we were able to live stream the event to our friends, families, and fellow band members isolating at home. The concert was a huge success, and we were delighted to be able to listen to and play with the two other bands.

We would love to thank Ms Videon and the conductors of the Mentone Girls SC Symphonic Band and the Southern Area Concert Band, for making this event possible.

This combined concert was the final achievement in a great weekend of music-making for the Wind Symphony.

Another highlight of the weekend workshop was a session working with Dr Nicholas Williams from Melbourne University, who shared new insights on techniques for better band performance. Apart from that, the weekend provided a great opportunity for students to focus on their playing skills and to get to know each other and make new friends within the ensemble.

All participants were rewarded for their hard work with notable progress and some great musical experiences.

GIGS ON THE GREEN

The year of Gigs on the Green was kicked off this Wednesday with a fantastic set from Meirav Berger (Year 11), Ruben Stein-Fooks (Year 11), Luca Villella (Year 12), Ben Jason-Easton (Year 12), Gisele Hennequin (Year 10), and Andrew Seamer (Year 12).

The students performed songs such as Sycamore Girl by Rex Orange County, Slipping through my fingers by ABBA, and Hey Jude by The Beetles. The performance was a fantastic way to kick things off and to set the bar high for future performers. See you next term!
