A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

We have reached the end of a very busy term. It has been wonderful to see the school come alive and once again filled with many of the events and activities that we had to put on hold for so long during covid.

Although we are all exhausted, we appreciate all the milestones we have been able to achieve.

EAST CAMPUS

It has been an absolute pleasure to showcase our beautiful school campus to many visitors. Principal’s, Regional and Central office personnel have been absolutely amazed at how beautiful this facility is. A great place to learn and we are indeed very proud.

Last week we hosted our Regional Manager Mr Ian Burrage and a Deputy Secretary of the Department Ms Kylie White.

To see the students so engaged in their learning as we walk around is an absolute highlight.

YOUNG CARER PROJECT

The Young Carer Project is a new initiative at McKinnon. It involves students from all year levels who provide care for a family member with a disability, chronic or mental illness, or addiction.

When I met these students yesterday, they shared their stories and the daily challenges they face in balancing their role as a young carer with school, friendships and teenage life. We all go through adversity but some people go through it much earlier in life, and it's important to recognise these challenges.

These students have plans to raise awareness of young carers in schools by presenting at assemblies, staff meetings and forming a YC and allies club. These young people have great strengths. They are mature, organised and want to support others. I look forward to working with them to raise awareness.

YEAR 7 CAMP

Congratulations to all the Year 7 students who participated in the Year 7 camp at Phillip Island. By all accounts, it was a wonderful trip and I am so very grateful to the staff who go above and beyond to ensure students are safe and happy.

To organise a camp is very difficult, and I thank the Year 7 Student Managers Mr Rood, Ms Brown and Ms Cocciardi for their meticulous work. It has enabled students to build wonderful friendships and share fun and memories.

SMALL VIC BIKE RIDE

Well done to Mr Howe, Mr Adlington and Mr King for all that was done to ensure this adventure could go ahead. The students had a wonderful time and all returned suitably exhausted.

Thank you to all the staff who made this trip possible.

UNIFORM

Next term students can choose to wear full summer or full winter uniform until week 3 (Monday 25 May) where full winter uniform is required.

School blazers are compulsory in Terms 2 and 3.

CAMPUS PHOTOS

As I reflect on the opening of the new east campus, I think of the opening of the original school campus in 1954.

Here are a few photos of the original campus. You can appreciate just how far we have come in the 68 years we have been educating students at McKinnon!

END OF TERM 1

I wish everyone a wonderful Easter break and hope you can all enjoy valuable restful time together.

I know everyone feels exhausted so the break from school will be well received. Take care.
