Co-curricular - Junior Sport

Junior Sport

It certainly has been a frantic start to the year with masses, assemblies, trials and the Junior School Swimming Carnival. Hopefully after this week, we all get to take a breath and take stock of the first two weeks of school.

All sports have now completed trials and teams have been selected. Boys should be aware of their teams and when they are training. Each week, I put the draw up in every Junior classroom along with the training schedule. Boys are to write in their diaries when they are playing on a Saturday. A draft draw, training schedule and the weekly draw can all be found on Stack Team App.

Signing up to the app is straight forward. Download the app to your phone. Search for SPC sport and click on the College crest icon.  You will be prompted to return to the sign-up page. Sign up making sure to send a ‘Join’ request to Junior School parents and Junior School students. Fill out all the fields in the ‘Join’ request and then I will then be able to give you access. If you don’t sign up, you will not receive the notifications for cancellations and changes to draws and training.

I sent an email yesterday with correspondence from the Uniform Shop. The staff in the Uniform Shop will open the shop exclusively for the Junior School on Thursday and Friday. Please make sure to read and complete all forms before sending your son to the Uniform Shop to collect his Co-curricular uniform.

I know there are some boys that are currently disappointed following summer trials. There is an opportunity for boys to still be involved in sport on a Saturday morning by being involved in the Summer Skills Program. The program concentrates on skill development of a range of activities, with a game base. It is a great way to improve skill level and overall fitness in preparation for the Winter season and to help in trials next year. Boys who are involved in this program and show an interest in Basketball or other sports may be used as a ‘floating reserve’ to cover large absences each weekend, should they occur. I would highly recommend boys currently not in a summer team to take up this opportunity.

Sessions will be held at the College, usually on SPC 3 starting at 8:00 AM, lasting one-and-a-half hours. Depending on the level of interest, a second session may be offered to cater for numbers. I will call for boys to nominate for this program on Thursday.

This year we have two exciting opportunities for our Year 6 students. Once again, after a COVID-19 delay, we will be sending a team to Armidale for the annual Rugby Tour. Unfortunately, we can only send one team this year so all boys interested will need to trial. I will make this announcement to the boys next week. We also, for the first time, will be sending two squads of 12 to Queensland for an EREA Football (soccer) tournament. Boys will need to nominate and then trial to make the touring squad. Parents/carers of successful students will be notified as early as possible, with a full set of details for the trips. Please be aware that involvement on either tour comes with the expectation that boys involved will commit to a further two years of playing those sports for the College.

I look forward to an exciting and full year of co-curricular sport in 2022. Good luck to all boys playing this weekend. Heads down, work hard for each other, but most importantly have fun.
