Year 6 challenge

Boot Camp Fun

This year we were successful in running the Mathematics Boot Camp for more than 80 Year 6 primary school students. I could see students entering the College with great enthusiasm every Tuesday from 3.30pm for four weeks. They were fortunate to learn basic mathematical skills, problem solving techniques, mathematical activities and also, they could make new friends. Thank you to Mr Turkich, Miss Dao, Ms Lim, Ms Tersigni, Ms Wang, Mr Nuske and Mr Ó Grádaigh for giving up their time after a tiring school day to facilitate and make the class to be of great interest.

Feedback from students…

Xavier, Santa Clara PS

The boot camp of Saint Norbert’s was fun and I enjoyed it because it helped me during when I struggled during school and I think I have improved the past week, in maths.

Tamika, Beckenham PS

The topics we covered helped me get a better understanding of the different ways we could solve a problem or writing the problem to make it easier to work out.

Chloe, Lathlain PS

On the first day of boot camp I was very anxious and I didn’t know what to expect. The first subject was fractions and that’s not my strongest subject but the teacher was there to help. The Tuesday after that was also a lot of fun, where we learnt about subtracting and I found it difficult but with a little help I pushed through it. After all the classes I think this is something all year 6s should do to help you out a bit.

Gianina, Santa Clara PS

The boot camp gave me a lot of confidence in myself when it came to maths. It also gave me an opportunity to work my way around the school (which was my only concern to be honest). It helped me learn new things such as sudoku which I never really knew. Thank you for teaching every here! Hope to see you next year!

Cheyenne, St Munchin’s Catholic School

I learnt many incredible skills at maths boot camp and I also had a lot of fun in the process.

Scarlett Joseph, St Joseph’s School

During these last four weeks I have learnt so much about the way high school works. I would like to say thank you to Mr Turkich for being an amazing math teacher I have really enjoyed these previous weeks that I have spent learning new things and new people.

Kobe, Kewdale PS

I learned how to play a game called crazy fish pot. Mr Turkich was my teacher - he is really fun and funny and he likes to talk about his toy frog Abraham.

My son and I recently attended the Math Boot Camp. I’d like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to meet some of the math teachers and hear what they had to say about how to support Jonathan with his maths education.  The material was interesting and made me feel comfortable with approaching them should I have any concerns.
