Australian Mathematics Competition

Jacinta Ryan

Early in Term 3, all students from Years 7 and 8, twenty one students from Year 9 and thirty one students from Year 10 entered the Australian Mathematics Competition. It is one of the largest Mathematics competitions in the world.  There were students from around thirty countries participating.  It aims to create, encourage and sustain interest in the study of Mathematics amongst secondary school students.  This competition tests everything from basic numeracy skills through to advanced problem solving. The Australian Mathematics Competition is conducted by the not-for-profit Canberra based Australian Mathematics Trust under the trusteeship of the University of Canberra.

As a general rule, the top 0.3% of students are awarded prizes, the top 2% of students receive High Distinction Certificates, the top 15% of students receive Distinction Certificates and the top 50% of students receive Credit Certificates.  For the Senior division these figures are 0.3%, 5%, 25% and 60% respectively.  A Proficiency Certificate was awarded to all students who have achieved a pre-set score but have not been awarded a Credit (or higher) Certificate.  All other students received Certificates of Participation. Every entrant was provided with an individual performance report.

We have received the results for the Mathematics Competition but the printed certificates have not been delivered at the time of writing this report. These will be distributed once they are available.

We had 38 students receive a Credit Certificate and 88 receive a Proficiency Certificate.

Distinction Certificates were awarded to: Zachariah Colliton (Year 7), Campbell Glazebrook (Year 8), Charlize Fairbairn (Year 8), Marcus Matuschka (Year 10) and Emma Robinson (Year 10).

Campbell Glazebrook was the Best in School Award Winner.

Congratulations to all of the students mentioned and to everyone who entered the competition.
