RIPPER READER: Monash and Chauvel by Roland Perry – those of you who enjoy reading about WWI would find it interesting. Monash was a caring leader, who found it difficult dealing with the British High Command. He tried to protect as many lives as possible when he sent his troops in to battle and his planning and tactics were admired by many. With his German, Jewish background Monash found it difficult to gain credibility as a leader. It wasn't all about blood and gore, but rather about Monash's planning and preparation in order to take the enemy by surprise and win, without sacrificing his men. It also told some heroic stories of men, mostly Australians, who helped to keep up morale with their daring deeds. Val

WATCH THIS: Pride + Prejudice + Zombies (DVD MA15+) Films based on books are often terrific, even though most people say, 'the book was better'; in this case, I enjoyed the film more than the book (which I didn't finish reading)! It was by no means a high-ranking film by my scoring, but it was very entertaining and easy to follow along with, while concentrating on a knitting project - being already familiar with the original classic by Jane Austen, which inspired the book of the same title as this movie. Phew! Anyway, this is a funny, outrageous Regency film, complete with zombie lore and gore, where the hero gets is the girl. The book, written by Seth Grahame-Smith, and its sequels and graphic novel versions, is also available from the library.
