Year 8 Animation

Drawings in Motion

In Year 8 Animation, students made their own Zoetrope as an introduction task to understand the principles of animation and how to plan and create their own moving pictures.

The term Zoetrope is from the Greek words (zoē), meaning "alive, active", and (tropē), meaning "turn". So "zoetrope" taken to mean "active turn" or "wheel of life", as if the pictures come to life! A Zoetrope is one of several pre-film animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs of progressive phases of that motion.

Students had to use a storyboard to plan their cyclical animation, then transfer the frames on to a strip of paper. They then cut slots to view through before attaching the animation strip onto a CD. The students loved seeing their drawings come to life!
