Later Years

YEAR 10

Welcome students and parents to Year 10 in 2021.

This year, our Year 10s will take their first steps into the senior school, signifying the beginning of the final stretch of their secondary school journey.

We all know 2020 was a difficult year for a number of reasons and we understand it may take some time to your find your feet in Year 10, however we are looking forward to the year being a rewarding experience for our students, achieved by challenging yourselves and taking each opportunity as it arises.

Year 10s have a unique opportunity in 2021 to access supports across the year to assist in them managing their workload and advancing their knowledge and skills in their subjects. These supports include the addition of English and Maths tutors in classes, MathsBoost on Tuesdays and Homework Club on Thursday evenings. These supports exist for students of all ability levels and we welcome all students to use them as they need.

For our Year 10 cohort of 2021, the Year 10 Level Leaders really want to encourage and reinforce our message from our assembly in Week 1. We asked each and every student to make the most of 2021 by stepping out of their comfort zone and taking opportunities as they present themselves. This may include signing up for sport teams, auditioning for the production, joining lunchtime clubs and so on. We know our students missed out on a number of these in 2020 and we hope they seize every opportunity that comes their way this year.

As your Year 10 Level Leaders, both myself and Julie White are looking forward to working with you across the year as we help support the transition into Later Years. If there is anything we can do to help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with either of us.

Thank you and we wish you all the best in 2021!

YEAR 11

Hello everyone, we are the Year 11 Year Level Leaders for 2021. This Year 11 cohort are starting their VCE after a very different Year 10 experience last year.

This year, the Year 11s have an extensive support network and unique opportunities to refine their knowledge, skills and abilities with the inclusion of tutors in VCE English and Maths classes, as well as the commitment of their classroom teachers. We encourage Year 11s to attend MathsBoost on Tuesdays and Homework club on Thursdays after school, and to use the senior centre to study before and after school. We urge Year 11 students to take every opportunity afforded to them to give themselves the best chance of success in VCE or VCAL and life beyond school.

We both loved working with you last year and look forward to supporting you further this year, as we are both passionate about educating young minds.

YEAR 12

The Year 12 students started their final year at Wantirna College with obvious enthusiasm and were amazing ambassadors for the school on their first day back, taking care of our new year 7 students and showing them the ropes.  The Year 12s certainly lived up to the trust that was placed in them to support our new community members on their first day when many were incredibly nervous.  The younger students were certainly very grateful for the care and consideration they were shown by the oldest students in the school.

Key messages in the first Year 12 assembly were about stepping up and giving yourself your best shot by trying hard and stepping outside your comfort zone.  A big emphasis was placed on attendance and striving to do your absolute best, making use of all the resources at your disposal.   The Senior Centre is open for work after school until 1700 Mon-Thurs and 1530 on Friday.  We will be starting Thursday Homework club shortly.

The Year 12 students started receiving their year 12 jackets in Week 2.  They must have been excited about them as there was a significant number wearing them despite the temperature.   We love the pride the kids show in these as it shows they have a real sense of achievement and connection with being in year 12 and we look forward to working with them as they complete their final year at Wantirna College.

 Parent Information Evening

In order to build parent understanding of the Year 12 VCE program, we ran our first VCE information evening on Monday 8th February,  in the Theatre. The evening involved an overview of the VCE program by Later Years Leader, Mrs Dina Mingos, followed by a presentation by Elevate Education on effective study skills to help your child achieve success.  There were some great suggestions for parents and students about study skills, time management and social media use.

Year 11 VCAL
