Term 2 Units of Work

This term, we are exploring the Bible and the books and stories of the Old and New Testaments during Religious Education sessions. We are choosing scripture passages, stories and parables and looking at some of the art works and pictures that illustrate these Bible stories. The parables of Jesus are found in the Gospels in the New Testament part of the Bible.

Jesus’ parables are simple and memorable stories, often with imagery, and all teach a lesson in our daily lives. Many of Jesus's parables refer to simple everyday things, such as a woman baking bread (the parable of the yeast), a man knocking on his neighbour's door at night (the parable of the friend at night), the farmer planting a seed (the parable of the mustard tree) or the aftermath of a roadside attack (the parable of the good Samaritan); yet they deal with religious themes, such as the growth of the Kingdom of God, the importance of prayer, and the meaning of love and forgiveness. They convey messages that are central to the teachings of Jesus.

Catholic Identity / Prayer and Meditation Survey

This year, we are participating in a Prayer Collective “Encountering the Sacred” with three other HTCEC schools in our Parish. We are asking the families in our community to complete a quick survey to assist us with collecting data for our school. Please use the below link to access the survey:

Family St Martin de Porres Five Minute Prayer Survey

Thank you to all those families who have already completed the survey. Surveys must be submitted by Friday 14th May. If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Lauren, Louise or Marg.

Sacrament of Eucharist

Congratulations to all our students who received the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time on Sunday 2nd May. Thank you to the parents, teachers and other members of our school community who supported them and helped them prepare for this important celebration.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Just a reminder to our Year 6 students who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation:

Date: Sunday 18th July

Time: 10:00 am (Parish Mass)

Place: St Martin de Porres Church, Laverton.

Students will need to bring their sacramental sash to school so we can add the Confirmation dove pin to the sash.

The Home Program for Confirmation will be sent home in a few weeks, to be completed by the first week of Term 3.

Feast of the Ascension – Sunday 16th May

The Feast of the Ascension is the fortieth day after Easter Sunday, which commemorates the Ascension of Christ into heaven, according to Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:2.

The Ascension marks the end of the Risen Lord’s time on Earth. In Acts 1:4 we learn that Jesus is leaving with a promise, the sending of the Holy Spirit and Pentecost: While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Next week, the Church celebrates the feast of Pentecost – Sunday 23rd May.
