NAPLAN 2021

Dear Parent/Carer

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2021 for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 11 May, Wednesday 12 May and Thursday 13 May 2021.

NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday 14 May 2021.

Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks.

Large print, braille, electronic and black and white versions of the tests are available for students that require them.

Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year.

If your child is eligible for support due to disability or an exemption, you should discuss this with his/her teacher prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the principal. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a withdrawal form. These forms are available at the school.

Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe your child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia.

I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.

For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au.

LS1 Seniors

LS2 Seniors

This term we have begun to immerse ourselves in the concept of ‘Survival’.To do this we went for a walk through the St Francis de Sales garden and watched a clip taken around Banjo Patterson reserve.

We used these experiences to provoke the students to question, identify what in the garden and Reserve is surviving and why?

This immersion also promoted discussion about what it means for something to survive and that there is a difference between surviving and thriving.

We look forward to developing our understanding around ‘Survival “ and working together to put this into action in our community garden.

LUNCHTIME SOCCER CLINICS HAVE STARTED!!

On Monday our first group of Preps participated in our lunchtime soccer clinic. We ensure all the preps who were rostered on for today managed to make it to the soccer clinic and they had a fantastic time!! As I was walking towards the group to take some photos to share with you I hear one of the preps saying, “This is fun!!” It was great to see all the students engaged and practising various skills.

We are very grateful to St John’s Regional College, who have provided us with the opportunity by nominating our school. Chris from Olympiacos, Melbourne was fantastic with the students who had a great time!! Chris will take 14 students each week and rotate through the grade levels. He will be focusing on soccer skills and working collaboratively with others.

FRIDAY SENIOR SPORTS

Our Grade 5/6 will continue participating in Interschool Sports. Today they played Hampton Park Primary as an away game. They will continue with their summer interschool sports for this term, ending with a Lightning Premiership day later in the term. The students will then pick their winter interschool sport and begin training for these towards the end of the term in preparation for their matches next term.

Grade 3/4 will continue their rotations of the summer interschool sports so that they become familiar with them. They will then end the term with House Competitions with some of the sports in order to give them additional experiences with the sports and a chance to be involved in friendly competition.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

In week 3 the senior students who came 1st – 5th in our Cross Country will get the opportunity to attend and represent us at District Cross Country. Only students in the 9/10, 11 and 12/13 year old age groups will be able to attend District Cross Country. Lulli will also run training mornings for these students before school. We will have a permission note available on Operoo by the end of this week which will provide parents with further details of the day and the training mornings. We ask parents to respond as soon as possible so that we can organise and begin the training for these students.

ST JOHN’S REGIONAL COLLEGE SOCCER GALA DAY

Our Interschool Sports soccer teams have been given the opportunity to attend a Soccer Gala day in Week 3 of this term. St John’s have hired the company Olympiacos who are running our lunchtime soccer clinics to run the day. They will also pay for bus transport to and from school and provide a sausage lunch for the students. There will be no cost involved on the day. We are extremely appreciative to St John’s for providing this opportunity to our students. Once again a permission note will be available on Operoo for the students involved and we ask parents to respond as soon as possible.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLINICS

Once again we have been lucky to receive Sporting Schools Funding this term. As a result we have been able to book football clinics for the Juniors. The timetable will be the same as the Basketball Clinic timetable so students will still wear their sports uniform on the same days as last term. Once we have confirmation from the AFL Football Federation, parents will be notified through Operoo.

SOCCER FUN DAY

On the last day of this term all students and staff will be involved in soccer fun day. Seniors will compete in House soccer matches, while Juniors will be involved in rotational soccer activities. It has now become a tradition at SFS to end off each term with a sporting fun day. Term 1 was Cross Country, Term 2 will be a soccer fun day and Tem 3 will be our footy fun day. What a great way to end off the terms!!

These are just some of the activities we have organised for this term so as you can see our students are going to be busy, involved in a variety of sporting activities!!
