Year 10 Systems Students Construct Working Disability Elevators

Systems Technology students at East Doncaster are creating home automation solutions for the older Australians and people with disabilities of tomorrow.

Both Year 10 Systems classes have recently completed a deep enquiry task where they were required to research, design and build a programmed model elevator that could be installed in a home to allow people with mobility challenges to ascend a small set of stairs.

Ethan (pictured in pale blue shirt) explained his team’s project worked though “an electric motor drives a pinion, which raises and lowers the platform.” He enjoyed the project and said that; “Designing something that could possibly change or save someone’s life is an extremely rewarding privilege to have and I’m sure grants a sense of purpose in an engineer’s work.”

Students implemented a range of mechanical systems to move their platform, including hydraulics. Sepehr (also pictured in a pale blue shirt) explained that “our teams design is definitely the most creative and coolest.”
