Class Celebrations

Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...

Prep

In Reading and Writing, students have been exploring the book called ‘I Went Walking’ by Sue Williams. As part of this unit, students took a walk around the school and attempted to write some of the things they saw along the way. The children are beginning to connect their learning from phonics to spell unfamiliar words. See below for some our fantastic work!

Grade 1

This term Grade 1 are learning about how to be more sustainable and leave a smaller footprint on the world. This week students made predictions about how long it would take different items to decompose (the word decompose was part of our vocabulary learning this week). Students wrote their predications down and then the whole year level came together to bury the different rubbish items: paper, a coffee cup, a banana peel and a plastic bag. We will dig them up at the end of the term and find out if/how they have changed. This week you could talk to your child about their predications and ask which item they think will take the longest to break down.

Grade 2

SRA:

This Term, the Grade 2 began using SRA as a tool to find out more about each individual child's reading skills. Students read high-interest fiction or nonfiction short texts with accompanying photos or illustrations that are differentiated to suit each child’s reading ability. Students then complete a 'Comprehension' section that poses multi-levelled questions about the reading selection. Then students move on to the 'Learn About Words' section that includes vocabulary and word-study exercises. It has been wonderful to see the students so engaged with this program!

Here are some photos of our Grade 2's doing SRA this week:

Grade 3/4

The Grade 3/4s have gotten right back into the swing of learning in Weeks 1 and 2. In Maths, students have been learning about angles and completed their very own “angles hunt” around the school. The students were on the hunt for acute, right and obtuse angles, and for an added challenge, were asked to spot some straight and reflex angles. Why not complete a "home angles hunt"? Students can take photos of what they find.

To further develop their love of reading, students began building their very own classroom libraries. The students enjoyed making decisions about the organisation and decoration of each classroom library. We can’t wait to begin borrowing from them.

Grade 5 and 6

As our Inquiry topic is all about natural disasters this term, students have been working together to create PowerPoint Presentations on a natural disaster of their choice. Students were in mixed Grade 5 and 6 pairs and were very confident in collaborating with others who aren’t in their class. It was lovely to see the children working together so well. In Literacy, students have been using their knowledge of climate change to write persuasive texts. They used research skills to gather information, and utilised knowledge of features of persuasive texts to write an engaging piece on why we should be sustainable at home.

In Maths, Grade 5 and 6 have been learning about fractions. We have been adding and subtracting by creating equivalent fractions, using our knowledge of factors and multiples to do this.

This week was the first week of SMPS Gardening Club! Grade 5 and 6 were lucky enough to be the first year level that attended. Here are some pictures of the students hard at work.
