SPORT & PE - Michael Jennings

SSV Coburg District Sport Competition

The final round of the SSV Coburg District Sport Competition was held on Friday 26 March 2021. Our teams played against St Bernard's PS. Once again, the games were close and exciting and our teams performed with great enthusiasm and determination to do their best.

In particular, it was great to see the our girls' basketball team win their first game, whilst the boys' basketball team almost won their second game of the season. They were narrowly defeated by two points in a heart stopper.

Congratulations to our softball, basketball and bat tennis teams on their performances and improvement throughout the season. Thank you to Ms Sargent (basketball) and Mrs Clarke (Bat Tennis) for their organisation, guidance and support of our teams.

NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

Our Middle students this week continued working on solving problems with Growing patterns. They made the circle and kept adding extra rings and recording the number of counters in each circle. The students were quick to notice they were adding 6 counters in each new circle. Some worked out the 10th circle by skip counting in 6 to work it out, others worked out that they could multiply each circle by 6 and take 6 away.

We had some students work out the rule, 6 times any number of circles minus 6.  They discovered the rule:  6n-6, they tested this out to prove they were correct and found it was true.  Amazing work for our Middle Student Mathematicians

Our junior students worked hard on locating numbers along various  number lines. They were great in finding the half way mark and then using this benchmark to help them locate other numbers along the line. Here are some examples of their work.

If you are looking for ideas for the holidays here are a few:

  • Complete jigsaws, these are great for fine motor skills and spatial awareness.
  • Count forwards/ backwards in the car, at dinner time.
  • Practice times tables (Year 3 need to know the 2,3,5,10 times tables) (Year 4 need to know all the tables from 1-10 )
  • Make a budget: If you have $50 to spend over the holidays keep track of what you spend it on.
  • Keep a timetable list what you do each day and at what time. Can you work out how much time you spend in bed? Watching TV? On devices? Eating ? Outdoors? What patterns do you see in your neighbourhood, in your garden, in your home? Play board games.

Enjoy the time to relax, play and notice Maths in our world.

ITALIAN - Rosa Fokianos

Salve! (Hello). Part of the Grade 5/6 students learning this term has been related to the Italian cultural (pre Lenten) festival of Carnevale. “A Carnevale ogni scherzo vale!” This is a saying that the children would be quite familiar with, (meaning: during Carnevale all tricks are allowed).

They learnt about different types of masks, certain Carnevale characters, including their names, costumes, places of origin, as well as role playing short comedy sketches. This allowed the children to practise their Italian oral language and have some fun at the same time...we have some quite funny actors in grade 5/6!

I look forward to doing more role plays and oral work with the children throughout the rest of the year. Bravissimi ragazzi!

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the St Fidelis school community a very blessed Buona Pasqua. (Happy Easter). Enjoy your holiday break and I look forward to teaching the children more italiano next term.

Saluti

Signora Rosa :)
