Hayley Dureau

Hayley is an Assistant Principal at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College. Hayley has been recognised at state and national levels as a passionate and forward-thinking mathematics teacher and educational leader.
In 2022, Hayley was the inaugural Mathematics Master Teacher in the Teaching Excellence Program at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership. She spent the year working with outstanding Victorian Primary and Secondary Mathematics teachers across the Government, Independent, and Catholic sectors. Prior to this, she taught mathematics and held the position of Leading Teacher, Head of Student Voice, at Mount Waverley Secondary College. Passionate about enhancing student learning by improving relationships between staff and students, Hayley’s work gave students the opportunity to provide professional learning for staff, drive elements the school’s strategic plan, design feedback tools which teachers use regularly, and allowed students to provide feedback and engage in powerful conversations around their learning, with their teachers.
Hayley is a Doctorate of Education candidate at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Her research explores how teachers use feedback from students to inform their practice. She holds a Masters of Instructional Leadership. Hayley has shared her work in Student Voice with educators in Australia, and worldwide. In 2017 Hayley travelled to the USA to undertake studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and while in America she presented to the Student Voice conference at the University of Vermont. In 2018, she travelled to Denmark to undertake applied research in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics teaching, and Student Voice.Hayley was awarded a national Commonwealth Bank Teaching Fellowship in 2021 and received the George Alexander Fellowship from the International Specialised Skills institute in 2017. She was named Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Department of Education in 2016, and National Secondary Mathematics Teacher of the Year by the Australian Mathematics and Sciences Institute in 2018. She was also awarded the 2015 Victorian Student Representative Council’s Teacher Advisor Award in 2015 and the Australian Council of Educational Leaders New Voice in Educational Leadership Award in 2016.
Session Title Leveraging genuine student voice and learner agency to improve student outcomes.
Session Abstract
In this session, Hayley will share what she has learned from leading work in the Student Voice and Learner Agency in a large multi-campus secondary and through her ongoing work in this important area through research and supporting schools to deepen their practice. Participants will explore some frameworks to guide implementation and improvement in their unique school context.
