Celebrating NAIDOC week
Recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
NAIDOC was recognised and celebrated with a range of different activities and events run across the school last week. We kicked off the week with a lunch for First Nations students and allies, it was great to have these students together celebrating with food and music. There was also a screening in of 'Black As', the show made famous on YouTube, in the school theatre.
On Thursday, we had our inaugural NAIDOC walk to the Aboriginal Advancement League where Leigh Saunders, Deputy CEO, greeted students with a lunch. This was followed by a presentation about the history and importance of the Aboriginal Advancement League and the work they do in the local community.
Students across the school wrapped up the week with a free dress day, celebrating the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. Many classes engaged with the meaning of NAIDOC and this year's theme ‘for our elders’ in connect class and the free dress gold coin donations raised over $700 towards a new mural at school by a local indigenous artist.
Well done to all students who got involved and made the week a success.
