Art Making and Exhibiting : Inspiring Excursions
Gallery excursion celebrating the completion of Unit 3 artworks
The year 12 Art making and exhibiting students took a trip to the art gallery The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and NVG international on Monday the 5th of June, celebrating the completion of their Unit 3 Folio and two artworks. These works were displayed in the Beugelaar Space in the last weeks of Term 2. Stay tuned for their Unit 4 masterpieces, which will be on display in the same space towards the end of Term 3.
They were also dipping their toes in Unit 4 preparation, studying two artworks selected from the galleries and responding to questions based on the presentation, conservation and care of these artworks.
Now, a word from a couple of our students:
‘It is incredibly insightful and helpful for our own personal work to frequently visit galleries and gain inspiration. Artworks such as ‘The Weight of Air’ by Elisa Scarlton was our personal favourite, as it fully immersed the audience in a digital space and blended with experiences using Buddhist and Toaist concepts. Overall, it was incredibly cool being surrounded by a whole room of bright flashing lights. Another inspirational artwork was The KLF (Koori Liberation Front) by Kait James’s display of indigenous culture, it was very refreshing to see the activism and involvement of a different culture which was a change. I would encourage fellow students, teachers, and parents to take ones leave off the couch and go see a taste of culture.’

Year 11 Melbourne Now Excursion
At the end of Term 2, the Year 11 Art Making and Exhibiting students went to visit the Melbourne Now exhibition hosted at NGV Australia (Fed Square). We were walked through the exhibition by our lovely NGV education tour guides, Sarah and Anna, and viewed multiple contemporary projects created by various Australian artists throughout the gallery. Within the vast spaces of the gallery, more than 200 local artists come together to connect and celebrate the diverse and creative communities that Melbournian artists come from.
In class we are using this exhibition to complete our coursework for Unit 2 Outcome 1, where we look closely at aspects such as curatorial considerations, thematic connections and the presentation of artworks.
While we were at the gallery we also viewed Top Arts and folios from previous years to further inspire our own creative processes. A big thank you to Ms De Sousa and Mr Rush for taking us to this unique exhibition.
