Grade 6 Cyber Safety Incursion

In the last week of Term 2 our Grade 6 students experienced a Cyber Safety Incursion presented by the Moorabbin Police Youth Resource Division. In this day and age, the majority of our students have grown up with the internet and technology as a regular part of life. The reality is that for a modern student, technology acts as an extension to their identity.

Students utilise this platform for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • both at school and for homework
  • as a source of information and entertainment
  • as a key communication tool
  • as an important means to socialise

The incursion centred around our students understanding the importance of internet and the many resource applications that we use and how we can sustain safety in these areas. They highlighted the importance of our identity and having the ability to leave a respectful 'digital footprint' for themselves and others.

Students left the incursion with a deeper understanding of:

  • the ability to protect personal information e.g. Safeguard passwords and privacy settings
  • prevention of cyberbullying by being kind online, reporting incidents, digital footprints, think before sharing and making positive contributions

Staying safe online is a shared responsibility, by fostering a clear awareness and by being a responsible digital citizen we can then ensure our students have a positive experience within the online environment.

Foundation Science Inquisitive Kids Incursion

On Friday 14th July our Foundations students welcomed Carmen from 'Inquisitive Science.' She introduced the topic of 'Weather' which aligns to the Foundation Term 3 inquiry unit - 'How do the changes in weather affect our environment'. Key questions that the students investigated were:

  • Why do storms occur?
  • How do clouds form?
  • Why does it rain and where does the puddle go?
  • What is a water cycle and what can this look like?

The students were exposed to a range of fun and engaging experiments, including evaporation in action, teabag rockets, models of clouds and rain and the creation of tornadoes in a bottle.

The students enjoyed the provocations and experiences to their inquiry unit and we look forward to to hearing about their deeper understanding throughout Term 3.
