Aitken LIVE

On Wednesday 7 June, I had the pleasure of listening to and watching the incredible talents of our music students at Aitken Live 2023. This was a truly outstanding event that showcased and celebrated the musical and cultural diversity of not only the music students but also their teachers, parents, sound/lighting tech crew, student leaders and Food Studies department . As an avid music and hospitality enthusiast, I was thoroughly impressed by the level of talent and dedication displayed by all the students who contributed to the evening as well as the respect and encouragement shown to one another.

First and foremost, the variety of musical performances was remarkable. The concert showcased a diverse range of genres, including classical, jazz, rock and even a contemporary original composition. This not only catered to different musical preferences but also allowed the students to showcase their versatility and proficiency in various styles.  The quality of the performances was simply exceptional. From the moment the first note was played, it was evident that the students had put on hours of practice to refine their skills. It was truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students and their music teachers.

The attention to detail was evident. The stage setup, lighting and sound were all controlled and designed with care, creating a professional atmosphere that enhanced the overall experience. The transitions between performances where students practiced moving the instruments quickly, kept the audience engaged and enthralled throughout the entire event.

Amongst the highlights of the concert were the ensemble performances. The songs/pieces by the choirs and bands were fantastic. The students displayed an incredible sense of teamwork and cohesion, creating harmonies were a joy to witness. It was evident that they had developed a deep musical connection and a shared passion for their craft.  In addition to the impressive musical performances, the concert also featured some talented soloists. It was a delight to see individual students step into the spotlight and showcase their skills. The confidence and stage presence displayed by these young musicians was truly commendable, and their performances left the audience in awe.

Lastly, I must thank Ms Elise Zijai and the entire Performing Arts faculty, Mr Daniel Pedersen and the theatre tech team,  Ms Deborah Garlick and the student catering team and all staff at Aitken College for their continuous support of the students’ performance opportunities. Their dedication to nurturing the education of their students was evident in the outstanding performances/roles that evening. The concert was a true reflection of their commitment to providing a high-quality music education, and their efforts should be applauded.

Year 9/10 Production – Headspace

On 2 June Dunhelen students were invited into the auditorium for a viewing of the Year 9 Drama Class Production of Headspace, written by Brad Jennings and directed by Ms Elise Zijai.

The class worked on the production for over a term with the support of the Year 10 Theatrecraft class under the guidance of Mr Victor Brincat. The Year 10s were required to interpret the script from a technical point of view and develop concepts for set, lighting costume, make-up, props, audio, and then manage it all during the performance.

“Headspace” was a piece of non-naturalistic theatre that employed elements of Magic Realism and Greek Theatre Chorus to tell the story of a teenage girl fighting the ‘inner voices’ as she navigates her way through grief, making life changing decisions, and the teenage experience.

The cast and crew did an outstanding job at pulling it all together and learnt a great deal about what it takes to stage a production. Their teachers are extremely proud of their application to the performance.
