Year 9 & 10’s Northern Adventure

Years 9 and 10 recently spent an action-packed week in Brisbane on their Stage 5 school excursion.  Leaving no stone unturned, they visited the Brisbane Planetarium, the Museum of Brisbane, the Queensland Maritime Museum, and Suncorp Stadium where students got to explore behind the scenes of a major sporting venue.

A visit to Australia Zoo enabled students to get up close and personal with koalas, snakes and other reptiles as well as learn about habitat and species conservation work undertaken by the zoo.

Organiser and Year 10 Adviser, Ms Stephenie Blewitt said that on observation, ‘The most impactful experiences during the trip were the visit to Australia Zoo and the Maritime Museum, where students were able to explore decommissioned naval ships and learn about historic battle and naval mission decisions made on some of the ships. One of these was the signing of a surrender document on board the HMAS Diamantina that ended WWII.’

‘Apart from the educational opportunities of such a trip’, explained Ms Blewitt, ‘students also learnt broader life lessons about interpersonal relationships, tolerance, patience and resilience. The students’ behaviour was terrific. They were a pleasure to take away and I feel the experience was of great benefit to each of them.’

For Year 10 student, Dean Bennett–Clancy, it was experiencing the Outback Spectacular and Wheel of Brisbane that were highlights for him. ‘The Outback Spectacular performance was incredible and seeing Brisbane from 60 metres up on top of the Wheel of Brisbane was awesome. The view was amazing', he said.

‘We all had a really enjoyable trip and it was good to be able to share those experiences with my friends and fellow students. Ms Blewitt put a lot of effort into organising such a great time for us and Ms Drummond and Mr Jones also helped to make it an enjoyable week away. I’d like to thank them for all of the effort they went to for us.’
