Visual Arts and Photography

Visual Arts and Photography continues to be a hub of creativity in the College. There is so much happening in the studios and so much more in the plans for the future.

Year 7

Year 7 have been exploring the artmaking genres of Steampunk, and more recently of photography and digital media. Students investigated, gathered their ideas and created Steampunk inspired sculptures. There were many great designs and the students developed solutions to problems they encountered during the construction process.

Students are currently exploring digital media, where they are photographing a range of different subjects and then using photoshop to create and enhance new compositions. Students explored how to take a photograph using the rule of thirds and basic camera operations. It will be great to display the photographs the students have developed.

Year 8

Year 8 have created their own still life composition using items that represent themselves and their interests. Many students created a sporting theme, whilst others included items that reminded them of their families and friends. Students began by arranging their still life at home and then taking a series of photographs. They then used Photoshop to digitally manipulate student’s images. From there, students transferred their favourite image onto canvas to create a painting. Students also had the opportunity to create a lino print to extend their concept further.

Year 9

Year 9 Visual Arts students have explored a range of artmaking activities during Term 2. Students began the term developing a body of work by building a concept into an object. This has been process driven and has resulted in some truly wonderful artworks. Most recently students have engaged drawing from life and in the tradition of printmaking and developing their own etching based on still life, which was photographed by the students and then, using the creative process selected interesting aspects of the image to create an etched artwork.

Year 9 Photography and Digital Media students planned and created Movie Trailers during the term. Students explored movie genres, mise-en-scene and pre-production in order to develop their Movie Trailers. Students developed unique concepts, drafted storyboards and each completed a synopsis. After filming and editing there was a range of interesting and creative results. A great effort was made and the grand finale included the viewing of Movie Trailers with popcorn.

Year 10

Year 10 Visual Arts students have explored the human form and how it has been portrayed in artworks and art movements. Students have developed and refined artworks exploring their selected concepts and media. Animation, monochrome painting and photography are just some of the creative forms students selected to create their refined artworks.

Artists Practice

In the Artists Practice, a students interest elective, students have worked collaboratively to create large scale works which will be displayed in the T-block hall in the near future. The students have also begun to plan an artwork which emphasises the positive aspects of the arts, with the vision of each of these works to be displayed in areas around the College.

Year 11

Year 11 Visual Arts students have had a huge term, students have been exploring their own artworks, from a postmodern perspective, creating works with materials and techniques such as paper twilling, painting, photography, mixed media and digital media, film making and editing. It has been exciting to see the works evolve. Students have also developed further understanding of how to evolve their ideas through documenting in their Visual Arts Process Diary and researching a range of contemporary artists and their practice.

Year 12

Year 12 have been working feverishly on their Body of Work, which will be due for submission in Week 7 of next term. The students are developing their works and engaging in critical discussion on how to develop their work. Last week, Year 12 trialled a practical study day, which was successful. Students were able to work on their Visual Arts and Design and Technology major works for the duration of the day. Year 12 students in Visual Arts and Design and Technology will be exhibiting their work in Week 2 next Term, this will allow a range of students, parents and friends to view the students work and provide further feedback to the work, this is such an engaging and worthwhile experience for all students.
